My mother, Blanca Nidia Barreto de Puerta, 83 years old, traveled to Bogotá, Colombia on November 20, accompanied by my brother Carlos, to attend an appointment at the U.S. Embassy as part of her residency process.

Although my mother has several health conditions, all were medically controlled before the trip. However, two days after arriving in Bogotá, she began experiencing severe breathing difficulties, possibly due to the city's altitude. Initially, they tried to stabilize her at the hotel with oxygen, but her condition deteriorated rapidly, putting her life at risk.

She was admitted to a private clinic emergency, since, not living in Colombia and not being affiliated with the public health system, she cannot receive care in a public hospital. She is currently in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), intubated, and in an induced coma, while the doctors work to stabilize her.

The doctors have informed us that she will need at least 7 to 10 more days in the hospital, and she will not be able to fly back to Venezuela until she is strong and stable enough to tolerate the journey.

My brother Carlos is alone in Bogotá accompanying her, and in addition to medical expenses, he must cover hotel, food, and transportation to stay close to her. These costs accumulate daily and have made the situation financially unsustainable.

All of her children and family are working to cover the expenses, but unfortunately, we no longer have any resources. Between the ICU, treatments, medications, and lodging costs, the family’s savings have been exhausted.

For this reason, with great humility, I am reaching out through this campaign to ask for help. Every contribution, no matter how small, will allow us to continue my mother’s treatment and keep Carlos in Bogotá while she fights for her life.

Mi mamá, Blanca Nidia Barreto de Puerta, de 83 años, viajó a Bogotá, Colombia el 20 de noviembre, acompañada de mi hermano Carlos, para asistir a una cita en la Embajada Americana como parte de su proceso de residencia.

Aunque mi mamá tiene varias condiciones de salud, todas estaban bajo control médico antes del viaje. Pero dos días después de llegar a Bogotá, comenzó a presentar dificultades respiratorias severas, posiblemente a causa de la altura de la ciudad. En un inicio trataron de estabilizarla en el hotel con oxígeno, pero su estado empeoró rápidamente y su vida corría peligro.

Fue ingresada de emergencia en una clínica privada- ya que, por no vivir en Colombia ni estar afiliada al sistema de salud, no puede ser atendida en un hospital público- y actualmente está en la Unidad de Cuidados Intensivos (UCI). Se encuentra intubada y en coma inducido, mientras los médicos trabajan para estabilizarla.

Los doctores nos informaron que necesitará al menos entre 7 y 10 días más hospitalizada, y que no podrá volar de regreso a Venezuela hasta que esté lo suficientemente fuerte y estable para soportar el viaje.

Mi hermano Carlos está solo en Bogotá acompañándola, y además de los gastos médicos, debe cubrir hotel, alimentación y transporte para permanecer cerca de ella. Estos costos se suman diariamente y han hecho que la situación económica sea insostenible.

Todos sus hijos y familiares estamos trabajando para cubrir los gastos, pero lamentablemente ya no tenemos más recursos. Entre la UCI, los tratamientos, los medicamentos y los costos de estadía, las reservas de toda la familia se agotaron.

Por eso, con mucha humildad, recurro a esta campaña para pedir ayuda. Cada aporte, por pequeño que sea, nos permite continuar con el tratamiento de mi mamá y mantener a Carlos en Bogotá mientras ella lucha por su vida.
