Sheba NEEDS DOGRRR NATION! I am digging deep for those one she has been with us since January, she was surrendered to the shelter while giving birth little did we know she was pushing for a few days the babies were stuck and others were decomposing inside her uterus. During the C-Section the doctors were able to save one puppy we named him UNO! While in surgery the doctors noticed the necrotic puppies had been pushing extra pressure on her bladder area and created a hole that was at the time they hoped it would heal. Months later .... she continues with the chronic UTI’s and the antibiotics are no longer working the last antibiotics we tried cost 900 dollars to fill! This surgery is her last chance at quality of life, please help us save her!
Here is her story
Unprecedented. Never been seen before in a canine. We will give it our best shot.
These were the words we heard when we spoke to the team of doctors at Texas A&M about Sheba. As you may recall Sheba is a little pittie mom who was bred at her first heat cycle (around 7 months old) and had severe complications at delivery (imagine that). She was then surrendered to THE SHELTER after struggling to deliver her babies for TWO DAYS. All but one baby died, with most of the litter dying inside of her creating life threatening complications. The ER doctors did emergency surgery to save her life, having to clean out her abdomen of sepsis from the rotting fetuses.
For the last several months we have been fighting constant urine leakage and urinary tract infections. No amount of medication would clear it up and the leakage became more and more, often with lots of blood in the urine. When we entered A&M we were thinking we would find the cause and that it could be easily fixed.
What we actually found was that Sheba has an obstetric fistula. As soon as I heard the name I remembered seeing a news story about a doctor who created a hospital in Africa to help young brides who developed these fistulas from giving birth to their first baby at too young of an age. Leaving these young women to live their lives as an outcast, living in shame, often never leaving their huts because they had a constant flow of leaking urine.
Poor Sheba is suffering a similar fate. Of course she does not feel shame, but she is suffering from constant infection that is now resistant to antibiotics. A case like this has never been documented in a canine. Makes me wonder if one has not existed OR if dogs who suffer this are banished to the outside for their entire life. The doctor treating Sheba will be writing an article about her in case it can help any other dogs in the future. This will NOT be a simple procedure as Sheba's fistula is located between her pelvic bone. A laparoscopic surgery will be needed to try and rough up the edges of the fistula with the hope that it will close while she has a catheter placed giving her bladder time to rest and heal. She will be hospitalized at A&M during this time.
Sheba is the sweetest dog. She loves everyone and everything. This is her ONLY HOPE at having a happily fuRRRever after. We need your help now more than ever to give Sheba this chance at life. Her procedure has been scheduled for May 19!
The summary of her diagnosis and procedure.
Sheba Dallas Dog RRR Diagnosis: Urogenital fistula
The next step for Sheba is to more fully define the nature of the connection between her urinary system and the remains of her uterus/cervix. We know there is one connection arising in the urethra, but need to be certain this is the only fistula before moving forward with efforts to seal up the hole. We also need to find out if the urine that enters the uterus/cervix from the urethra then exits via the vagina or simply flows back into the urethra.
Things are complicated by two additional issues; the first of these is the derangement to her anatomy from the damage done during the dystocia. Her bladder and urethra appear to be scarred down to the remnants of her reproductive tract; this limits accessibility using our standard rigid cystoscopes. In addition, Sheba 's urinary tract and uterine stump are currently harboring two infections, one of which is driven by a highly resistant organism.
Assuming there is just one connection between the urethra and the uterine stump, we plan to attempt to get this hole to scar down, by essentially scraping the tissue with a very specialized balloon device. This will be done through an endoscope. If the cervix is open and is a conduit for fluid, we may need to place a catheter in to the stump to promote drainage. A catheter will be placed in her urinary bladder to protect her urethra while the tissues heal. We anticipate leaving this catheter in for about a week.
There are many unknowns, and a case such as Sheba's has not been previously described in the dog. There is a risk of introducing infection into her abdomen, which could be life-threatening. It is also entirely possible that our plan will need to be modified or prove ineffective, in which case we may have to consider a surgical approach. This would be very aggressive and likely result in significant discomfort and a prolonged recovery, with no guarantee of a successful outcome.
Miracle: a surprising and welcome event that is not explicable by natural or scientific laws and is therefore considered to be the work of a divine agency. I believe in miracles. I know we do not always get them when we want them, but I still believe. In many ways Sheba is a miracle. She survived a horrible pregnancy that resulted in the death of all but one puppy. It also caused unimaginable consequences to her body and health.
Today Sheba needs another miracle to have a normal life. She will be undergoing a FIRST of its kind surgery at 1:00pm at Texas A&M. The doctors have made a plan but have no idea what to expect. Please keep Sheba in your thoughts and prayers today. She really is the sweetest dog. We also still need to raise most of the $5000 needed for her surgery and the amount will likely end up being much more if she requires extensive hospitalization after.
As a side note, even though we have been through the ringer before with other dogs each case like this takes it’s toll on us. The amount of stress in trying to raise the money to cover it and make the best decisions for the dog always comes with a cost to our emotional well being. It’s a tough road to walk and one you never fully comprehend until you are the one walking it.

At just 8 months old, Sheba is desperately fighting for her life and has suffered immensely at the hands of selfish and despicable humans. When Sheba was basically a baby herself, her owners made the deplorable decision to breed her, and then dumped her while she was in labor.
It is believed that poor Sheba had been in labor for 2 agonizing days, before receiving medical attention. While at the emergency vet, 2 dead puppies were pulled from her birth canal. Our sweet girl fought long and hard, and was eventually able to deliver one surviving puppy, named Uno. Sadly, Sheba's battle did not end there. She developed paralysis on one side of her body, and had severe septic peritonitis. She had two abdominal surgeries to flush and drain the fluid in her abdomen. They have placed a JP drain to allow for the infected fluid to drain from her abdomen. Unfortunately, the infection in her abdomen has caused adhesions (scar tissue) to form between her organs. In addition, Sheba was placed on 3 different antibiotics and received a plasma transfusion. She will remain at the vet and will be monitored closely until they see improvement in her blood work and less fluid.
The pain and trauma that this precious soul has endured is absolutely heartbreaking and gut wrenching. No animal should ever have to go through something like this. Please keep Sheba in your thoughts and prayers and consider donating to her medical fund.
Sheba and Uno Update
Uno was pulled from mama and put with a bottle feeder while mom tries to recover she is on pretty strong antibiotics and Uno is not able to nurse.
Sheba's condition is still guarded she very weak as to be expected, her kidney values are still abnormal, she is experiencing difficult walking now she has some paralysis on the one side. The doctors feel this might have to do with her having to bear down for so long. She has a long road to go we are praying she survived this HELL! Someone made a choice to BREED a 8 month old baby for profit for fun whatever the reason might be they basically almost killed her! She had to be in labor for several days before the two dead babies came out. The others were huge and all necrotic basically tottering inside, NO MOTHER SHPULD EVER EXPERIENCE THIS KINDA OF HELL!

Sheba has a very severe septic peritonitis from being in labor for the past few days and a dead fetus stuck in birth canal. She had a second abdominal surgery to flush and drain abdomen. We have placed a JP drain to allow for the infected fluid to drain from her abdomen. Unfortunately, the infection in her abdomen has caused adhesion's (scar tissue) to form between her organs. Adhesion were broken down, but there is a very high chance they will continue to form if we can't get infection under control. Sheba is on 3 different antibiotics and has received a plasma transfusion. Now we just wait. The goal is for each day for there to be less fluid in her drains and her blood work numbers to improve. Sheba is very weak in her rear legs at this time. We are unsure if just from pure exhaustion or from damage to sciatic nerve from puppy stuck in birth canal for so long. Sheba

A lot of you have been worried about Sheba and are asking for updates. We are glad to let you know that she has improved but her condition is still VERY guarded. She's not out of the woods yet but this morning she tried to stand on her own and we cannot tell you how happy this has made us! Sheba has a long road ahead of her but she's showing us that she wants to fight! There is a risk that she will develop an infection so she will be monitored closely.
Sheba was given a chance at life thanks to Remy the Great Pyrenees who acted as an emergency blood donor last night. Remy is the personal rescue dog of one of our fosters/volunteers who rushed him to the ER late last night so he could donate blood. He spent all night at the ER with Sheba and is now resting comfortably at home and getting all the treats he wants. Remy is a hero!!!
We still have Sheba at the ER , and she is scheduled to leave tomorrow! She was brought in after her owners allowed her to remain in labor for days, and all but on of her babies died. She had two surgeries, and was fighting sepsis! Her bill currently is at $11,372. We have raised $2,587- we are short $8,785. That is a huge, devastating difference! It is hard to raise these funds, especially after she received emergency care!!!
Uno is doing great he is with a bottle feeder and growing fast.
