I need funds to help my mom get surgery and recover from a fracture with displacement in her right femur. She's in Caracas, Venezuela, where the sanitary conditions in public (low-cost) hospitals are so dire that the risk of infection increases by 50% if we take that route, due to the lack of basics like running water.

Please help me get her surgery done in a clinic, where the risk of complications is much lower.

The amount shown now may vary as I find out how much the post-surgery recovery will be, as well. The stated amount should cover pre-op medications, pre-op medical examinations, ambulance transportations, prosthetics (if we go that route), or whichever other repair items are needed.

The sooner we reach the goal, the sooner we can schedule the surgery, and the less muscle mass my mom will lose due to being bedridden. Due to her excellent physical condition, which she has maintained by practicing yoga since her 20s, her joints are in great shape, thankfully, making the eventual recovery from whichever route we take much easier.

If you don't know my mom, she's a baddie. She learned to sew during the dictatorship of the 50s because they'd physically harm children when they made mistakes, so she'd later make my dresses and bathing suits growing up. Despite the rocky beginnings of her education, she was the first generation of women in my family to go to college, have a job, buy herself a car, and an apartment (in a very different Venezuela than we have today). She has 60 years of mystical studies and has helped everyone on her path with her knowledge and wisdom. After my father's passing in 1994, she devoted herself to helping students learn memorization techniques as a volunteer psychologist in my school. She later taught yoga to neighbors, family, and friends for free in our community room at our building. Some of her students avoided the need for medical procedures by taking her yoga classes.

She's a strong-willed, wildly independent 88-year-old who is appalled that she's having to "bother people" by having fallen on her way from her bedroom to the bathroom last Tuesday, September 2nd.

Bringing her to the US is not an option right now, given the severity of the fracture. Still, her cousin is a retired traumatologist who has recommended the best in town, in decent yet not luxurious clinics, for her surgery. My cousins live next door and are taking great care of her. My college best friend's husband is a paramedic and is also on-call for anything she needs, whenever she needs it, as he was on the night of the fall. We've also hired an aide to be next to her at all times.

As soon as the surgery is scheduled, I will know when to buy a flight to be there with her during the most delicate part of this whole journey.

Necesito fondos para ayudar a mi mamá. Tiene fractura con desplazamiento en el fémur derecho. Está en Caracas. Debido a las condiciones sanitarias de los hospitales públicos, donde podría hacerse la cirugía a un costo mucho menor, aumentaría el riesgo de infección en un 50%.

Por favor, ayúdenme a que se opere en una clínica, donde los riesgos de complicaciones son muchísimo más bajos.

El monto que se muestra en este momento puede variar a medida que me vaya enterando de costos posoperatorios, como la rehabilitación. Este monto debe cubrir medicamentos preoperatorios, exámenes médicos preoperatorios, transportes en ambulancia, una prótesis (si se decide que es lo mejor) u otros implementos de reparación de su fémur.

Mientras más pronto se alcance la meta, más pronto se podrá programar la cirugía y la menor cantidad de masa muscular se perderá debido a estar en cama. Gracias a su excelente condición física, que ha mantenido practicando yoga desde sus 20, sus articulaciones están muy bien, haciendo que su eventual recuperación, sea con prótesis o no, sea mucho más fácil.

Si no conocen a mi mamá, es una “dura”. Aprendió alta costura durante la dictadura de los 50 porque maltrataban físicamente a los niños cuando se equivocaban, así que luego ella me hacía mis vestidos y trajes de baño. A pesar de que su educación se vio interrumpida por un tiempo, ella fue la primera generación de mujeres en mi familia en tener educación universitaria, trabajar, comprarse un carro y un apartamento (en una Venezuela muy distinta a la que tenemos hoy). Tiene 60 años de estudios místicos y ha ayudado a todos en su camino con su conocimiento y sabiduría. Después del fallecimiento de mi papá en 1994, se dedicó a ayudar a estudiantes, enseñándoles métodos de estudio y memorización, como psicóloga voluntaria en mi colegio. Luego, enseñó yoga a vecinos, amigos y familiares de forma gratuita en el salón comunitario de nuestro edificio. Algunos de sus estudiantes evitaron procedimientos médicos gracias a que tomaron sus clases de yoga.

Una mujer de voluntad fuerte, increíblemente independiente a sus 88 años, está horrorizada de tener que “molestar a la gente” por haberse caído en camino de su habitación al baño el martes pasado, 2 de septiembre.

Traerla a los Estados Unidos no es una opción en este momento, debido a la gravedad de la fractura. Sin embargo, su primo es traumatólogo jubilado y nos ha recomendado a los mejores médicos que operan en clínicas decentes, no lujosas, para su cirugía. Mis primas viven al lado y la están cuidando estupendamente. El esposo de mi mejor amiga de la universidad es paramédico y está al pendiente, así como lo estuvo la noche de la caída. También hemos contratado a ayudantes que se turnan para su cuidado en todo momento.

En lo que se programe la cirugía, sabré para cuándo comprar vuelos para estar a su lado en la parte más delicada del camino.
