On 8/24, Alli and Firnie (Firnspiegel - her sweet pup) were trail running near Washington Pass. While running, Firnie disappeared, and Alli searched for her for over 6 hours. Alli found her down a steep rocky slope below the trail they’d been on, silent and not moving. With the help of climbers, they extracted Firnie and drove back to Bend to the Emergency Vet.

At the Emergency Vet, they evaluated her and determined she sustained trauma to her right forelimb (carpus) and left hind limb (stifle = knee) as well as minor superficial abrasions and excoriations, which were clipped and cleaned. Additionally, she had mild pneumothorax (air in her chest) and suspected pulmonary contusions (bruising on her lungs).

The vet put splints on the right carpus and left hind limb, which can be considered with weekly bandage changes for 6-8 weeks while processing and considering options and if surgery is feasible.

Although it had been extremely stressful, Firnie's prognosis was good, and everyone breathed a sigh of relief.

However, after going to the family vet yesterday, Firnie is not tolerating the splint well on the back leg and needs emergency surgery ASAP for both legs. Alli was given the impossible decision of trying to afford the surgery or euthanize her sweet baby. Although surgery will be complicated and the next 6-8 months will be extremely challenging, the expectation is that Firnie could live with minimal pain and a full but different life.
