Urgent Surgery and Vet Bills – Help Save Luna
Hi, my name is Airi, and I am the creator of thepod.greys handmade martingale collar shop. I never imagined I’d be in this position, but after relocating from Australia to Japan, settling in, and adjusting to a new lifestyle, I now find myself reaching out for help to save my beloved Luna.
Recently, Luna was diagnosed with glaucoma and uveitis, and through a series of examinations starting from February 24th, it became highly likely that she has eye cancer.
Luna’s condition had worsened, and the infection had progressed further. Instead of proceeding with the planned procedure, which would have put her through significant strain under full anesthesia, the decision was made to move straight to surgery as soon as possible. During her appointment on March 18th, it was determined that removing her eye is the best option to relieve her pain.
Her surgery is now scheduled for March 23rd.

The Story So Far
(Medical photos, quotes, and invoices will be updated as I recieve them)
February 24th: I noticed Luna was uncomfortable and showing signs of distress in her right eye, so I rushed her to our local vet. Blood tests were done, but nothing abnormal was found internally. At this stage, she was diagnosed with uveitis, an inflammation of the eye. Detailed examination here > Vet Bill for February 24th

February 25th: Luna seemed brighter and continued to improve over the next four days. However, on the fifth day, she began squinting again in her right eye, and by the sixth day, her other eye was also affected. Concerned, we returned to our local vet, who referred us to a clinic with an eye specialist. Thankfully, we were able to secure an appointment for the following day.

March 4th: We drove two hours to Petemo Animal Veterinary Service for Luna’s examination. An ultrasound was performed, but no abnormalities were found. We were told that the cytology test results would take a week to come back. In the meantime, Luna was treated for glaucoma in her right eye and uveitis in both eyes, while we waited for further diagnosis. Detailed examination here > Vet Bill for March 4th

March 11th: We returned to Petemo Veterinary Service, where Luna’s cytology test results came back negative. Unfortunately, this likely means she has cancer in her eyes.
We’ve explored every option, but the next step would be attempting to take a liquid sample from her eye. This is a high-risk procedure, requiring full anesthesia and a needle in her eye, with no guarantee of obtaining a usable sample or clear results. Her swelling and infection make it even more difficult.
To improve the chances of a better sample, reducing steroids in her system is ideal. Given the risks, we’ve made the tough decision to schedule the procedure for March 18th. Until then, Luna continues treatment for glaucoma and uveitis while we prepare for what’s ahead. Detailed examination here > Vet Bill for March 11th & Quote for the procedure on March 18th

March 12th: Took Luna for a nice walk around the block, trying to enjoy the little moments. With the procedure day just around the corner, I’m praying everything will be okay.

March 15th: Luna’s eye looking more red..

March 17th: Getting worse daily..

Luna’s condition had worsened, and the infection had progressed further. Instead of proceeding with the planned procedure, which would have put her through significant strain under full anesthesia, the decision was made to move straight to surgery as soon as possible. It was determined that removing her eye is the best option to relieve her pain.

March 23rd: On our way to the vet, I couldn’t shake my doubts from the night before—Luna’s eye looked a little better, or at least not worse, or maybe I was just getting used to seeing it that way.

My doubts were right! In the photo, the right side shows last week, and the left is from today. Luna hasn’t been on any medication (just eye drops for her uveitis and glaucoma) since we stopped it in preparation for surgery. The doctors are confused—it doesn’t make sense. I watched her eye worsen every single day, yet today is the first time I’ve seen any improvement.
While the examination results and the doctors’ opinions haven’t changed, the fact that her eye has improved led to postponing the removal surgery. For now, we’ll continue monitoring her closely. If it worsens, we’ll return for further examination as soon as possible.
I can’t help but wonder—could this be a miracle, or just the calm before the storm? I don’t know how to feel, but I’m grateful she’s home today. I’ll keep everyone updated.
