Imagine living every day in fear that your home could collapse beneath you. That is the terrifying reality for an 80-year-old widow living in Trinidad and Tobago (TT), where the cost of living has become astronomical. Years of heavy rainfall have eroded the foundation beneath her house to the point that, without urgent intervention, it could collapse—either with her inside or onto the neighbor’s home below.
As her son, I provide financial support for her every month, but this is an urgent crisis that requires additional and immediate help. A contractor has estimated $4,000 (roughly TT$24,000) to build a retaining wall that will stabilize the home, but there is also structural damage that must be repaired, bringing the total need closer to $6,000 (roughly TT$36,000).
There is an April 21st deadline to secure government assistance for materials—after that, this support will no longer be available, making the situation even more difficult.
My mother has always been strong and independent, but she cannot tackle this challenge alone. Without action, her home remains at serious risk, and time is running out.
