We have started this event and GoFundMe to pull a community together and show our support for an amazing friend and his partner, who received some life threatening news over the last several months.
Carl, a passionate Soul, an inspiring Health Coach, who has impacted so many in his own community, has been struck by his own life threatening illness. Carl has spent years leading and educating on the power of empowering ourselves to live fully through nutrition and mindset. Now he is struggling for his own life, through an acute health crisis.
In September 2023, Carl started developing tonsilitis, or so they thought. His right tonsil got really inflamed and swollen. Carl had a doctor check it out who prescribed some antibiotic spray to put on it and monitor it to see what happens.
Over the course of a month and a half, 2 different doctors had prescribed 3 different kinds of antibiotics and treatments for this, but it just wouldn't get better. Sometimes things would feel better, and other times it would not.
Eventually, in mid-October, Carl started complaining that the area was starting to hurt and developed a stinging sensation.
So, back to the doctor again it was confirmed that it was just a bacterial infection that can be treated easily. Yet another range of medications started.
But, unfortunately, over time, it just got worse and worse until one morning that Carl woke up, crying from pain .Will rushed Carl to the ER for the doctor to examine him where it was determined that the tonsil has completely died and is literally rotting in his throat. The threat of not removing the tonsil was that the infection could spread into the soft tissue in his throat and impact major blood vessels and could also impact his ability to breathe. The only option was for the tonsil to be surgically removed, which they did, on both sides.
Due to the complicated nature of the infection and the risk of severe bleeding, Carl had to remain in hospital for 5 days.
The 3 weeks following his surgery were filled to the brim with multiple check-up appointments with the ENT specialist, to make sure things were healing properly.
For the large part, Carl was healing well. But he kept complaining about a small spot in his throat that felt different, like there was something stuck in it. The doctor just chalked it up to some residual tissue from the surgery and said it would get better as the healing process continued.
Unfortunately, it did not, and over the course of a few weeks, this little left-over tissue “grew” and formed a big bulge in Carl’s throat, almost the same size as his original tonsil. The doctor wasn’t sure what the cause could be and decided to monitor the site for any signs of change since there was no pain associated with it.
About 4 weeks ago, Will noticed a white spot on the swollen area. He informed Carl and suggested making an appointment again to have it checked. The doctor didn’t see any reason for concern and provided no treatment.
Over the course of a few days, the white spot spread and was clearly an infection that looked very similar to what Carl had originally. Eventually, Will had no choice but to take Carl back to the ER.
At this point, the infected area was impacting the whole right side of Carl’s throat. After examination, the doctor concluded that it is either a bacterial or fungal infection.
The first hospital visit had already cost them $6,500 US out-of-pocket, and thousands more for the treatments prior to and after the surgery. This had completely decimated their savings.
Due to her course of treatment, they had a nurse costing $200 US per day with antibiotics and supplies costing around $600 US every 3 days.
The fungus that the doctor suspected, called mucormycosis, later confirmed through pathology tests, is a very rare and potentially fatal infection with a 65% mortality rate.
This is where the complication with Carl’s Treatment started…
On top of the thousands of dollars needed for treatment, the required medication wasn’t even available in the city they live in, so relocation to another city will be required or shipping of the medication to their city will need to be arranged.
Will had the difficult task of sitting next to Carl and telling him that they cannot afford the care he needs and is not even available. He was devastated and heartbroken.
With all of this transpiring, Will shared with me that Carl sank into a deep depression and started preparing to die.
But, through sheer determination and rigorous research, Will found an alternative option in the form of an oral antifungal medication. But even this option has been met with challenges.
Once again, the medication is not available in the city they live in. It will also cost $1,000 US per week for the treatment.
Carl is also in need of an additional surgery to remove the remaining infected tissue from his throat to increase his chances of survival and recovery. A surgery which will cost thousands and that they have to travel to another city for.
This has completely destroyed our friends financially, as their ability to maintain their business- their only income, is being halted. They have had to ask their landlord to halt their rent payments until they can get some money with no light in sight.
The truth is that money is going out faster than it is coming in.
And we witness the stress and worry of Will literally searching for ways to save Carl's life, we are praying for a Collective Miracle to support.
After using all of their personal resources, we heard that Carl is still far from over his journey of surgery, medication and healing.
Carl's next mandatory surgery that will cost between $3000 US and $5,000 US, depending on the speed of recovery and success thereof
Additional diagnostic tests and scans required in preparation for and as prerequisite for the above surgery that has already cost almost $1,000 US and will cost $1,000 US more to complete
Medications as treatment for the infection in excess of $1.500 US per week
Support and assistance with paying their rent of $1,500 US / month
Support and assistance with living expenses of about $2,000 US / month.
Our Hearts' hope is that with a ripple effect of kindness we can support our friends in any capacity, even a small nominal impact would show them there is hope.
We believe any little bit of help can support them, during this scary and unsettling experience, and that this next surgery and ongoing treatments will save Carl's life.
