UPDATE FROM THE ORGANIZER:
We have updated this page to better reflect the urgency and reality of Denise's current situation. Denise's health and housing situation remain the same. Funds needed are now extremely time sensitive due to an April 1st eviction court date the landlord has served her with for 6 months of back rent. Every share truly does make a difference, and we are deeply grateful for the compassion shown so far by everyone.
About this Fundraiser
My dear friend, Denise DeStefano, is in a critical health crisis and urgently needs our help to escape an uninhabitable living situation. Denise’s initial severe health issues stem from a near death car accident in 2008, which resulted in multiple operations and the development of debilitated auto-immune diseases. Her doctors have made it clear: the environment she lives in is making her sick. She is known for always advocating for others, donating to special causes, and giving her time when needed, so now we need to be here for her.
The Problem
Denise now lives in a rent-controlled studio apartment in an attempt to manage costs. The company that owns the building has deliberately neglected the property to try and force long-term tenants out. The apartment is full of black mold, severe water damage to the bathroom floor, and rodent infested. Housing and Health Department services have inspected and fined the building owners for these violations, but the landlord retaliation and bureaucratic red tape have left Denise trapped. The landlord is actively trying to evict her rather than fix the issues.
Why We Need to Move Now
This isn't just about comfort; it's about survival. Denise's medical team has issued urgent recommendations: the current living conditions are causing her autoimmune diseases to worsen and adversely affect her, which lead to her not being able to maintain employment. She must move immediately.
She is fighting this battle alone. She has no car, her health limits her physical ability, and she simply cannot afford upfront costs of a new and safe apartment. The current studio apartment costs $1,700 a month, which is the baseline monthly rent in her area.
How Your Donations Help
We are raising $15,000 to cover immediate and essential costs to get Denise into a healthy and safe environment as soon as possible, so she can hopefully recover the best she can and avoid being homeless.
• First and last month’s rent plus security deposit
• Moving expenses and movers, as Denise cannot physically move anything herself.
• Essential items and furniture needed to ensure a healthy home. She is unable to bring current furniture and other things due to mold spores.
• Medical Costs and living expenses during this time.
Please Help Denise Get Back On Her Feet
We are her safety net. Please consider donating whatever you can today. Every dollar brings Denise closer to safety and stability. If you are unable to donate, please share Denise's story widely within your network. Your generosity can help Denise regain her health, security, and life.
Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your kindness and support.
