Urgent Support for Baby Bowie and his family

On March 28, 2025, Bowie Cloud Smith came into the world and for his family - some of our dearest friends Nathan, Trinity, and their two little daughters Rocket and Ozzy - everything changed.

Shortly after birth, Bowie was diagnosed with Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia (CDH)—a rare condition that affects roughly 1 in 3,000 babies. It typically shows up in prenatal scans, but in Bowie’s case, it went undetected. His parents had no idea what was coming.

CDH happens when there’s a hole in the diaphragm, allowing abdominal organs to move into the chest. For Bowie, this meant that part of his stomach and intestines developed in the space where his left lung should’ve grown. As a result, his left lung is very small, and his heart was pushed to the right side of his chest. He’s been fighting for his life every day.

Bowie is currently out of the NICU receiving round-the-clock care in a specialized CDH unit. He has undergone surgery to move his organs back into place and close the hole in his diaphragm. After that, he’ll begin the slow process of healing—learning to breathe on his own, working toward feeding, and giving his lung time to grow.

There is no easy way to say it…

The road ahead for Bowie and his family is long. His recovery will take months, followed by a year of extreme caution to protect him from illness. That also means his older sisters, Rocket and Ozzy, won’t be able to attend school or daycare during this time, to reduce the risk of infection at home.

His parents are doing everything they can to be present for Bowie and still meet the needs of their other children—but they need our help.

This community is like no other and I know if we band together to help , it will make a huge impact on the family we all know and love. Nathan and Trin have been such lights in so many peoples lives, particularly in Sarasota. No parents, especially THESE parents should have to worry about the necessities or medical care while healing their only son.
