I'm Sarah, and I started this gofundme in order to raise money to help my brother Joshua, his two daughters Alexis and Remi and my sister in-law Kris who lost everything on Sunday night to a fire that started in the kitchen of their house.
Only just having moved in 5 months ago and finally feeling settled, my brother and his family found themselves running out of the house last night with no shoes, no winter jackets, none of their medication, as they became aware of the growing fire and intense smoke. Remi, who's 5 years old was pulled out of her bed asleep with no idea what was happening. Alexis heard noises downstairs so was already somewhat alert.
The kids who were sleeping didn't have time to put on clothes, they ran out of the house in fear with their pjs which were shorts and t shirts in -3 degrees. My brother burned his hand quite badly and now cannot work until it heals. He's also diabetic and didn't have time to grab any of his medication while this was happening. The medication was in the fridge, and the kitchen was the room that was burned the most.
The entire family is traumatized and still in shock.
They're currently staying with myself and my mother, 7 people in a house with 1 bed and two sofas. But that's beyond the point. We're eternally grateful they got out of the house in time and they are ok. The process of grieving for what they had and begin on the path of rebuilding their lives and home is a heavy burden to bear. If the state of the world and the pricing of everything in Canada due to the outrageous inflation didn't make life hard enough already to get by financially, this makes it almost seem impossible.
They are in need of immediate funds for:
- Supporting unpaid work leave due to burns.
- Medications to manage ongoing health concerns.
- School supplies for the children.
- Replacement glasses
- Furnishing their new home when they secure one.
- Potential housing damages not covered by insurance.
- Rent for temporary housing.
- Extra mattresses to accommodate the family's current living situation.
- THIS HAS BEEN COVERED FROM DONATIONS THANK YOU! Clothing, jackets, and boots suitable for the Canadian winter.
Your support, whether through donations or by sharing this message, will make a significant difference in helping them rebuild and recover. Any contribution, no matter how small, is deeply appreciated.
Thank you,
-Sarah and Family
