I am reaching out to you with a heavy heart as our beloved community of Ofunato, Iwate Prefecture, faces an unprecedented crisis. As of today, March 3, 2025, a devastating wildfire continues to rage out of control, having already scorched more than 2,000 hectares (approximately 5,000 acres). The situation has escalated to a critical level, prompting city officials to elevate the risk status and urge over 4,000 residents to evacuate for their safety. Tragically, more than 80 homes have been damaged or destroyed, leaving families displaced and in urgent need of assistance.

The NY Iwate Heritage Association is launching this GoFundMe campaign to stand in solidarity with our brothers and sisters in Ofunato. Every dollar raised will go directly toward providing relief to those affected by this disaster. We are committed to ensuring that all contributions are delivered to the Ofunato local government at an appropriate time—no later than this summer—so they can efficiently distribute aid where it’s needed most, whether for emergency supplies, rebuilding efforts, or supporting displaced families.

The people of Ofunato have always shown remarkable resilience, but they cannot face this alone.
