- In the 1980s, my long-time friend and business colleague, Clarence Drew, now deceased, adopted a town in Malawi, Africa. For several decades, we helped him visit the town to pay school fees for 250 children, build roads and provide books and sports equipment. He actually drove the roller and made roads himself so they could get to water and the school.
- Several of the boys we sponsored wrote to me at that time. One of them has continued to write to me to this day. He has a son of his own now, Gideon, who needs specialized, emergency surgery.
- Gideon was operated on at age 2 for a hernia, but it wasn’t successful. It damaged major organs. The photos of the scars are quite shocking.
- Gideon has been seen at the Mercy Institute for Pediatric Surgery, Madonna's hospital in Malawi. The doctor at Mercy recommended a surgical team in a nearby country, as Malawi only has a few pediatric specialists and they cannot help him.
- The fee for the OR and the neurologist, neurosurgeon, gastrologist, endoscopic surgeon, and anesthesiologist, post-op care, and medication is $4,000. Only citizens of this country may be provided medical services, so there is no financial aid available from the hospital.
- I have spoken with the lead doctor and checked out his diagnosis with US doctors who confirm the procedure is in fact urgent. To the extent possible, I have researched the clinic and the medical professional's licensing as valid.
