Phase II - A Race Against Time

This fundraiser is to provide ongoing support to a Baha’i Afghan family with 3 young children, who were forced to flee from Afghanistan to escape persecution by the Taliban. They are currently living in Pakistan, under grave danger, as they await approval of their refugee application to come to Canada.

A small group of Baha’is and friends in Nelson BC are working to sponsor this family to come to our community.

Because of you, we have reached two major milestones!

1. Through your generosity we previously raised the $40,000 required, by the sponsoring agency, to support this family for one year once they come to Canada. These funds are in trust with the Mennonite Central Committee until they arrive.

2. With your help this family has secured an invitation to apply for refugee status under Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada.

But the crisis has escalated. Pakistan has cut off all lifelines for Afghan refugees. Visas cannot be renewed and any work has recently been deemed forbidden.

While Canadian immigration has accepted their application, final documentation takes time this family may not have. With parents terrified, as deportation would be certain death for following the Baha’i Faith, they are prisoners in their own home, afraid to be detained by the Pakistani authorities. Unable to work they have zero income. The very real dangers continue to challenge everyday life in every way.

• Safe housing in Pakistan as the situation deteriorates

• Emergency evacuation if forced to flee before Canadian paperwork finalizes
