Injured Firefighter of 13 years and Public School Teacher face homelessness, loss of furbabies

Hi, I'm Bex. I taught in local public schools for ten years and I live with my fiancée Amber, who was a firefighter for 13 years but can no longer work due to injuries acquired on the job.

In September of 2024, Hurricane Helene destroyed our house. We're selling it as-is and will not see any equity from the home. We moved in with family members about an hour away, so I got another job in the area.

During the job change, I missed a car payment and my car was repossessed on Mother's Day, leaving me with no transportation to a job.

I've been Ubering to my other, part-time job, but it's so expensive that I'm working for basically tips.

Today, we were told by the family member we were staying with that we have 3 days to get out so the landlord doesn't kick them out for breaking their lease by having us here. Our four cats will also have to be rehomed or sent to shelters if this happens.

We're so close to our fresh start! We've been grinding for two years to overcome personal traumas that happened to us both in 2023, and Hurricane Helene's aftermath has been our last stumbling block. Once we have a car and/or place to stay (totally willing to live in our car for a while if we can get one), we're going to pay it forward and continue helping our community, including housing former students who end up in similar situations, as we've done before.
