Urgent Medical Help for Perry Safer’s Battle with Type 1 Diabetes & Pancreatitis

On Wednesday, December 10, we took Perry to the emergency room at Shands Hospital after he began experiencing severe abdominal pain, rapid weight loss, and several other worsening symptoms.

After two days of testing, doctors discovered that Perry had been living with undiagnosed Type 1 diabetes for at least a year. Further testing has now revealed that the cause of his diabetes is chronic pancreatitis.

Just six weeks earlier, the restaurant where Perry worked — Mossfire Grill — permanently closed. Despite immediately applying for new jobs and financial assistance, he hasn’t yet been able to secure work or support. Without income, Perry was recently forced to move out of his home.

Each day in the hospital adds to the already overwhelming medical expenses. We’re asking for your compassion and support as Perry begins this difficult journey toward recovery. Once he is released, Gwen and I will be taking him in for as long as we can — but we simply don’t have the financial means to cover his medical bills, medications, and the new dietary needs that come with managing diabetes.
