ARTICLE 19's indomitable regional director for East Africa, Mugambi Kiai, was diagnosed with end stage kidney failure in February 2023. Without a kidney transplant, he will need crippling dialysis for the rest of his days, with a greatly diminished quality of life.
The great news is that after a long search, a donor has been found! His friends and family need to raise about 15,000GBP (2.5 million Kenyan Shillings) by the 21st of July to have the surgery as scheduled in early August, with the first tranche due June 21st.
It's been heartbreaking seeing what this disease has done to someone as kind, dynamic and thoughtful as Mugambi. A graduate of Harvard School of Law and the University of Nairobi, Mugambi joined ARTICLE 19 in January 2020 as the Regional Director for the Kenya and Eastern Africa region. He is a lawyer by training and a journalist with a distinguished track record of nearly three decades in the areas of Human Rights, Rule of Law, Justice, Governance and Democracy including Freedom of Expression and Media Freedom issues. He passionately believes in building a movement to protect Freedom of Expression around the world and has given a lot of himself to make this happen in Eastern Africa.
Now, we have a chance to support a truly amazing person and give something back to him.
Please help us to reach this target and share this appeal. Every little bit helps!
