Urgent Legal Aid for single mom and autistic son

It’s hard to put into words the struggle my friend Cam is facing right now. As a single mom to Jamie, who is three and non-verbal, her life revolves around caring for him. This isn’t just about raising a child; it's about navigating a world that often feels unforgiving, especially with Jamie's autism. Cam is not only his mother but his sole guardian, and the reality of their situation is heartbreaking. She’s fought so hard to provide him with the love and care he deserves, even while balancing multiple part-time jobs. However, the recent legal battles with Jamie’s father, who has a history of abuse, have escalated, leading to an exhausting court fight. Cam needs immediate help to cover the costs of her legal representation, as her current attorney is fighting tirelessly on her behalf. Jamie needs full time attention, requiring Cam to be on call throughout the day making it impossible for her to work a full time job. Jamie attends a good school (ABA services, 9am-5pm) while Cam works several part time jobs and side shifts nearby in order to remain available due to his special needs. No matter what- Cam is there. Always. She is all her son has ever known which no one else can provide or even come close to understanding due to his autistic struggles. Jamie is non verbal and cannot swallow solids. He experiences a number of challenges due to his feeding aversions including social interaction, frustration, & lack of communication. Jamie is a child of CHOA, actively seen at the Marcus/CHOA multidisciplinary feeding center where he had swallow evals, continues his checkups, has GI dr. had biopsy surgery, and most recent news got into the Famous Marcus Autism Center after years on the waitlist. Thank God for all these places and his incredible care team too.

But this is just a fraction to what else is happening in their lives. 

The father of the child, finally legitimized, is fighting her in the civil courts- still. After two years in already, his grueling legal team continues to push for full custody and Jamie’s name changed. Prior to this, the father was physically abusive to both she and Jamie (strangulation and child abuse) resulting in a 12-month TPO, which sadly expired March 2024. From that, the father has 4-criminal indictment charges still pending against him, both felony and misdemeanor. Though it is in a different county, the trial will take effect soon.

Now, this custody final hearing, which was drug out to a lengthy 3-full day continuous battle, resulted to the decision that they file a Motion for a new trial.

Cam’s legal team now includes an outstanding appellant attorney that had the expertise and heart to review the case with fresh eyes, taking immediate action. Cam needs financial support for these legal fees. It’s a blessing she has such a strong attorney standing by her side and a new attorney to assist in the appeal.
