Hello!
As some who know me may know, after graduating from Cornell I moved to Binghamton to pursue a Master's Degree. Last month, I moved to a new apartment and immediately faced issues with increasing levels of aggression from my leasing company. Not only have they dismissed my need for disability related accommodations previously, they have also routinely failed to maintain the premises and have ignored or met me with hostility anytime I have brought these issues to light.
Recently, the rental office was made aware that they had promised my apartment to someone else on accident and, despite me having faithfully paid all deposits and rent for my duration here, they are attempting to force me out to make room for the new tenant due to my 'attitude and difficult requests'. They are wrongfully claiming that I have been living in someone else's apartment illegally, despite making repairs to the apartment at my request, accepting my rent, and the misunderstanding being due to their own clerical mismanagement. My interactions with the head of the leasing company have all been distinctly gendered and racialized in addition to his flippant dismissal of my disability, and as of our last call he has resorted to increasing levels of aggression and scare tactics to get me to back down and leave. He has made his intention to force me out clear, and has explicitly stated that even if there is no cause, he dislikes me enough to still force an eviction.
I'm asking for financial help for the estimated cost of legal fees in preparation for the worst at trial (this man has a history of getting away with tenant mistreatment, abuse and discrimination) and for the costs of immediate new housing as this man has made my new apartment unsafe to live in and I have to relocate within the next ten days, something extremely difficult in the middle of Covid-19.
Thank you so much for anything you can do to help!
