On November 9th, while in Seattle for an art show, Tom underwent an emergency five-hour spinal surgery due to a severe disc herniation and critical spinal stenosis—complications that have resulted in a (hopefully temporary) loss of use of his legs. What followed has been a harrowing journey: beginning in the ICU, followed by a difficult hospital stay while awaiting transport home, and now the challenging reality of recovery as he learns to navigate life in a wheelchair, with legs that currently feel like “dead weight.”

Throughout all of this, Tom has somehow kept a smile on his face. Every time I talk with him, he still asks about me—genuinely and thoughtfully—despite everything he’s going through. Michelle has been extraordinary as well. She flew to Seattle on a moment’s notice, spent days away from the support systems and comforts of home when she needed them most, navigated an unfamiliar city, and managed countless medical details on Tom’s behalf.

Now that she’s back home, she is working tirelessly to prepare their house for Tom’s return in a few weeks. But the truth is, they can’t do this alone—they need help.

Not going to lie. Today has been tough. We have lots to do at home for me to thrive. Doors need enlarged, switches need moved. Bathroom wall needs removed. Ramp needs to be installed outside the front door, a lift needs to be constructed and installed. Walls need to go up. More electrc needs to be added which will require another electric sub panel installation. The main floor bathroom needs to be built out…This is on top of what we already planned before this incident happened. I called our broker about refinancing. Sounds like this is not an option because I am on short term disability and income coming in is too low. The other option is to borrow against my IRA to buy some time. But that comes with its own set of issues. We’re barely making all our bills as it stands now. Adding on monthly expenses beyond this… I just don’t know what or how to do it. Honestly- I need a miracle beyond me walking right now. Please pray and send good vibes. We really need it.
