My name is Nada, and I’ve had the privilege of calling Rachael my friend since high school. She is one of the bravest, kindest young women I know — but right now, she is facing the fight of her life.

Rachael has a congenital heart condition often called a “hole in the heart” — medically known as a septal defect. This means there’s an opening in the wall that separates the heart’s chambers. Because of it, blood flows the wrong way, straining her heart and putting her lungs at risk.

Medicare deems the 3mm hole cosmetic, since she has not suffered a stroke—meaning she must either wait for a stroke, or pay for private care.

Surgery is high-risk, but it offers Rachael a chance at a healthy, longer life.

As her friend, I am determined to do everything in my power to help Rachael get this second chance. But the medical costs are overwhelming, far beyond what her family and friends can cover alone.
