Hi, my name is Derek. I’m a husband and father doing everything I can to keep a roof over my family’s head.

We’re currently at risk of losing our home, and I’m reaching out with deep humility and hope.

How It All Started

For the past 6 years, I worked full-time as a rideshare driver. But in October 2024, everything changed. On the way to a routine mechanic appointment, my car’s drive shaft failed unexpectedly — a devastating breakdown that took the repair bill from $1,000 to over $6,000.

I wasn’t prepared for a repair of that size. I tried everything — applying for loans, seeking new jobs, even requesting credit increases — but nothing worked. And without my car, I couldn’t drive for Lyft anymore. That meant my income disappeared almost overnight, and my family was left trying to survive on just my wife’s paycheck.

We’ve Done Our Best

Even with the loss of income, we’ve stayed committed to paying our bills and rent. We've communicated with our landlord, and we even discussed a payment plan. But on Saturday, June 14, we were blindsided with a letter demanding full payment of this month’s rent by June 27 — or we’ll be forced to leave.

This was heartbreaking. We’ve lived here for years and always paid on time, with only one 30-day delay on our record. This home means everything to us.

Why We’re Asking for Help

We love our home. We want to stay. But if we’re evicted, we have nowhere else to go:

My wife is earning her license to be a funeral director and is almost complete. If we're forced to move, she'll have to start all over.

We need to schedule a time for my wife to have a much-needed surgery, and she will need a safe place to heal.

Our credit took a major hit due to my extended job loss

We don’t have the funds for first and last month’s rent elsewhere

We don’t currently meet the 3x rent income requirement

This home is our safest and best option — and it’s slipping away.
