I made the difficult decision to leave an abusive relationship where I experienced both financial and physical abuse. Starting over was not easy, but I fought hard to rebuild my life. After saving what I could, I moved into a new place in December and began creating a stable future for myself. Things were finally starting to improve when I was unexpectedly laid off from my job in mid-January. I worked hard to get back on my feet and continued searching for opportunities. Then another crisis hit. I was diagnosed with a mass on my ovary and was told I needed surgery as soon as possible. Faced with an impossible choice between paying rent and paying for a necessary medical procedure, I chose to have the surgery. My health had to come first. Because of that decision, I have now fallen behind on my rent. I currently have only three days to come up with my May and June rent payments to avoid losing the safe home I've worked so hard to secure after escaping abuse. One of the reasons this situation is so frightening is that I worked incredibly hard to leave an abusive relationship and create a safe place for myself. Maintaining stable housing is not just about having a roof over my head—it is also about preserving the safety and privacy I fought to regain. To protect myself, I am intentionally keeping certain details private. What I can share is that losing my housing would put me in a vulnerable position at a time when I am still rebuilding my life after abuse.
