Urgent Help Needed for Cindy's Medical Care
Donation protected
Hello everyone. My name is Sandy Scholl and I want to tell everyone about my daughter. Her name is Cindy Worrell. At an early age, Cindy started having hip issues. Things got so bad that she had her 1st operation at the age of 11. Over the next 40+ years, she has had 9+ surgeries. These included having both hips replaced, the left side multiple times.
Cindy tried working over the years. The mobility issues and pain made it hard to work. She met her husband and started a family. This allowed her to be a stay at home mom. Over the next 10 years, she raised 3 wonderful children until they had a divorce in early 2000.
Over the next few years, Cindy did what it took to provide a great home for her 3 kids until the bills became too much. At that point, Cindy and my grandkids had to move back home. Over the next 10+ years I have watched her condition get progressively worse.
Cindy lost all of her insurance coverages prior to the divorce. On multiple occasions Cindy has tried getting help from the state with either Social Security or Disability. As she was a stay at home mom, the state informed her that she wasn’t old enough for Social Security and did not have enough work credits to qualify for assistance. Also due to having no insurance over the years, she could not afford to go to the doctor, thus she had no medical records of the issues since her teens.
All of these denials for assistance and multiple visits to the hospital brings us to July 27, 2024. Cindy’s left hip dislocated and she was not able to put it back into the socket. She had no choice but to go the a local Emergency Room in Saint Lucie County. Once the doctors took x-rays, they realized that they did not have the medical experience to help her. The decision was made to transport her to a hospital where there was a team of specialists that could help her. This landed her in Miami Dade County.
The Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act (EMTALA) made it so she could be admitted into the hospital to get care. Once admitted, she spent 5 days in the hospital. Once she was stabilized, she was discharged and sent home. Nothing was done to attempt to fix her hip. Cindy and I were informed that the hospital only needed to “stabilize” her and as she was not a resident of Miami Dade county, she didn’t qualify for further treatment. Cindy was sent home unstable and she was to be not weigh bearing on her hip.
Since being sent home, Cindy has been doing everything she can do to stay off her left hip. This includes using a walker or crawling to the bathroom. On December 30, 2024, Cindy sat up in bed as she has done for years and her hip dislocated again. Once again she went to a hospital in Saint Lucie County and they transported her again to a hospital in Miami Dade County. Cindy is 51 years old and is currently in the Hospital waiting, hoping for someone to approve a much needed surgery. Since being in the hospital, Cindy has contracted an upper respiratory infection and her abdominal hernia has ruptured. She is also getting weaker by the day.
I feel helpless, as at 71 with back and neck issues, there is little i can do to help her other than sit in the room to keep her company. I watch her get worse everyday. She is getting weaker by the day. I don’t know how she finds the willpower to continue to fight through the pain.
We have continued to try to get help from the county and the state. We have reached out to local news groups trying bring light to what is going on. They are trying to help but we are needing help now.
This has brought me here to ask you for help. I am currently unaware of how much we owe the hospitals, how much the needed surgery or sugeries will cost, or how much it will cost to have someone come assist her at home. If you are able to help with anything, it would be greatly appreciated. If you are not able to help with money, if you could help get the word out to others, it will help. If nothing else, please say a prayer.
Thank you for taking the time to ready this.
