HELLO, THE STORY OF SOLYMAR L
This is her story. Solymar is the big sister to her three siblings, and it was time for her yearly check-up. She had been complaining about some knee pains, her hands were hurting, and she was unable to run, climb, and had no energy for anything. So, it was time for her yearly check-up anyway, and my 1-year-old as well. So, I set up an appointment for both, and I spoke with the doctor about what Solymar was saying was hurting and the stuff I had noticed as well. We went for an x-ray, and I spoke with the doctor. What came up was Rickets, which is when you don't have enough Vitamin D and Calcium in your bones. That's what was causing the pain. Her PCP wanted her to do emergency blood work that day, so I took her immediately to get the labs done. The next day, I got the call on September 20 from the PCP saying what came up on the labs was Kidney Disease, also known as Kidney Failure. I had to take her to the ER right away to do further testing. That night changed all of our lives forever. We found that she has kidney disease, and both of her kidneys are small; they are the size of an infant's kidneys. So, the doctor and I spoke about what we could do to help her get better. We came to the conclusion that hemodialysis would be started first to help her blood levels get better right away. The day before, they had to give some blood because it's something that they always do before the catheter is placed inside the chest. It was very emotional for all of us to see my 11-year-old going through this. The surgery was on September 23, and that afternoon, dialysis started. We could notice the changes, and with the medication as well, everything was happening so fast. Fast forward to now, she is doing dialysis 3 times a week and is unable to go to school, which is her favorite thing to do. Her teacher loves her and says she is way too smart for her age. So, the doctor and I spoke about PD dialysis, which is done in the comfort of your own home and done every night. But unfortunately, we don't have the money to fix up the house because she will have to have her own bed and own room to be able to use the machine. She and my other daughter share a room, and she is 3 years old. She is very curious, and my 1-year-old as well. Due to my husband missing days of work and also having fractured his foot at work, he now has to be out of work for 6 weeks. We need help; we don't know where to turn. For now, we have no money to pay our bills.
