Urgent Help for Our Home's Completion

Donation protected
Hi, I’m Nicholas, and my family urgently needs your help.

I’m 20 years old and one of 12 children. Right now, 11 of us are without a permanent home, squeezed into my grandparents’ house while we try to finish building our own, but we desperately need to give them back their space.

My grandfather is facing a serious health crisis, and his house has to be modified to make it handicapped accessible. We need to clear out the majority of our belongings to create space and eliminate hazards.

On top of that, we have suffered devastating setbacks: mold exposure, the loss of our camper and tent, and most recently, the loss of nearly all of our stored belongings to water damage, mold, and pests.

We are doing everything we can to finish our home quickly, but at this point we can't do it alone.

Please consider helping if you’re able — or simply sharing our story.

---T️️he Details---

Why We Are Without a Home:

We outgrew our house years ago, but couldn’t afford anything larger, so we made a bold decision: to build one ourselves. We sold our home to fund construction. My dad left his job to work on the build full-time, and my older brothers cut back their hours to help.

The money from the sale gave us just enough to cover materials.
We planned to do 100% of the labor ourselves.

(We’ve poured everything we have; time, energy, and love, into building our home together.)

This wasn’t just about a house. This was our chance to build a future: a multigenerational home that would offer space for older siblings starting out, extended family in need, and one day, my grandmother.

Then Came the Setbacks :

(The "four-season" tent we hoped could give us temporary shelter during the build did not live up to its name.)

  • Our camper, meant for temporary shelter on the land, was damaged in the move. It now has no heat or plumbing, and serious water damage.
  • Our "four season" tent was destroyed in a winter storm: bent and torn under the weight of heavy snow and rain.

With no warm, livable shelter at the land, our plans went from living at the land during the days and just sleeping at my grandparents' to unexpectedly moving into their small house and adjacent cabin full time.

Not long after, several of us developed rashes and headaches, symptoms later linked to mold in the cabin’s attic. I had to move in with friends while recovering, and we lost that small bit of extra space at my grandparents'.

Then came the worst blow: nearly all of our stored belongings; furniture, bedding, toddler gear, clothing, kitchen supplies, camping gear, and more were ruined by water, mold, and rodents. The loss was overwhelming.

The Most Urgent Part: My Grandfather

(My grandparents have shared a lifetime together. As my grandfather’s health declines, we desperately want to give them peace and space to cherish their time together.)

Over the past year, my grandfather’s health has declined rapidly.

At 90 years old, he is living in constant, severe pain from a serious medical condition. The only option to relieve his suffering is amputation, which would leave him permanently disabled.

He has chosen to endure the pain until now, when his condition has reached the point where surgery has become necessary. His amputation is scheduled for in 4 weeks, and in that time his home urgently needs to be modified to accommodate for accessibility.

(My grandparents’ entryway, currently packed with winter gear, soon needs to be clear to be able to fit a stair lift.)

Caring for my grandfather takes several hours each day; managing his medications, therapies, and appointments. My grandmother lovingly does it all, but her own health is beginning to falter under the stress, and his needs are increasingly difficult to keep track of in such a busy space.

As his care grows more demanding, it is critical that she can focus on caring for him, and herself, without the added stress of a crowded household.

Our Most Urgent Need:
(Raising the roof was a major milestone!)
(From bare ground to a solid structure, we've gotten a lot done in the last year!)

We’ve made tremendous progress on our home: the foundation, framing, and roof are complete; windows and doors are just about finished. Plumbing rough-in is under way, and siding will begin shortly.

However, our timeline needs to accelerate far beyond what we can manage on our own, and our budget has already been strained by the losses we’ve faced.

The biggest thing that would help right now is the ability to hire critical labor, especially for plumbing, electrical, insulation, and sheetrock, so we can move into the first floor quickly while continuing to finish the rest ourselves.

How You Can Help:

Every contribution brings us closer to stability, but if you’re not in a position to give, the simple act of sharing this campaign helps more than you know.

Most of all, we ask for your prayers: for continued progress, and especially for my grandparents and my family during this difficult time.

Initial Goal: $40,000
This will replace some bare essentials that were damaged, and with the most needed labor, allowing us to move out of my grandparents’ home and into our own space before we face the additional challenges of another winter.

It will help fund:

  • Plumbing rough-in labor: $7,000
  • Electrical rough-in labor: $9,600
  • Insulation: $13,500
  • Sheetrock labor: $10,000
  • ️Replacing some of the basic necessities lost to mold and damage: children's clothing and shoes

Stretch Goal
If we’re blessed with more, we would continue with:

  • Heating system installation: $5,900
  • Full electrical throughout the home: $19,700
  • Installation costs for doors, trim, and flooring
  • ️Replacing other essentials lost to damaged storage
