My name is Mary Anttila. I'm raising funds for my sister, who is 74 years old, and her needs are not being met by social security alone.
For 8 years, she worked as a cashier at Home Depot in the Pro Department, standing on a concrete floor (no mats or stools provided per company policy). Two weeks ago, she was terminated with zero severance, and the only cause was that a few customers felt she was "sarcastic." She's a lot like me. We tell jokes, and people usually find us funny or corny, not insulted. Her clients were 99% men, and it's a stretch to believe that grown men would feel abused by a good-hearted 74-year-old who did her level best to keep a sense of humor despite abuse from management and often customers. She was sworn at, threatened, and I truly believe there is an age discrimination case here, but that could take months and probably result in a dead end for her financially.
She is 2 weeks away from being unable to pay her rent, car payment, insurance, and utilities, not to mention food. She literally has no one that can come up with the cash she needs to stay in her apartment. I'm reaching out for help now so she can at least have a month to look for work and hope unemployment insurance comes through. Thank you. Our goal is $2,500, but ANY MONEY will help.
