Urgent Help for Corey and Shawn's Housing Crisis
Donation protected
Due to job instability over the previous year, Corey and Shawn have been struggling with rent payments and making ends meet in other living expenses. Because of the amount of back-owed rent that we are liable for ($7k), and are unable to pay, we have received a court summons and notice of eviction. Our upcoming court date is on August the 8th.
Our current landlord has informed us that if we are able to pay the back-owed rent before the court date that they will drop the eviction charges. Otherwise, we will most likely be ordered to vacate our current apartment 10 days after the court date (Aug 18th). Further, we know that moving in itself is expensive, and currently have no savings to help us even if we do find another location to move.
We went to look at an apartment on July 24th that we could move into as soon as July 26th yet we would need at least $4,000 to move into this new location (deposit, first months rent, pet deposit, as well as moving costs). In addition to the costs previously outlined, there will be fees associated with transferring our power services to the new apartment and because we would be moving into city limits we would need to have our pets registered with Buncombe County so that they are in compliance with city ordinance.
Shawn's preference would be to pay off the back-owed rent and be able to sign a new year lease in their current location. While the rent is expensive, we are taking steps to secure more income. Should we move to this new location, however, the rent will be a flat rate with no additional community fees (private landlord). Most apartment complexes have associated fees for amenities.
We look to you, our friends and community, for assistance during this stressful time. This situation is one I (Shawn) would wish on no one. We hope to continue to be good stewards of our community and ask for your grace and continued prayers.
