The Crisis: A Father's Fight to Stay Present

My name is Matthew Hatt, and I am reaching out on behalf of my brother, Chris. He is a

dedicated, devoted and nurturing Canadian father and a former international school teacher with

over 20 years of experience, but over the last year, he has faced a crisis that has brought him to

his absolute rock bottom.

He is currently a 49-year-old father to a beautiful 4-year-old daughter. The stress of a recent

separation, combined with the isolation of living a transient life abroad, has sufered a complete

and sudden mental breakdown. This crisis forced him to leave his career and has left him

struggling to simply survive.

If it weren't for his daughter, he has admitted he would not be here today.

Reaching Rock Bottom

Despite his best eforts to recover and find a new job, the market has been unforgiving, and his

funds have vanished. Over the past few months, he has had to sell nearly everything he owns,

his computer, his personal belongings and household items leaving him nothing but one

saucepan and one frying pan. He has has to sell his scooter—the primary means of

transportation in his city—just to put food on the table, meaning he has to walk 30 minutes a

day, carrying his daughter on his back to make sure she gets to school. On top of this he has to

walk upwards of 40 km a day just to attend job interviews.

His situation has only become worse, now forced to sell the Christmas presents he had

purchased for his daughter. This has hit him harder than selling his own belongings and he is

barely holding on as everything has become dark and hopeless. He has been living in a tiny,

single-room apartment, doing his best to care for her during their shared custody time, but he is

behind on rent, facing imminent eviction and has run out of things to sell.

Why This Matters

My brother grew up without a father and doesn't even know his name. This experience has

instilled in him a powerful, non-negotiable goal: to be a constant, loving presence in his

daughter’s life. He is a man who desperately wants to work, be productive, and put his life back

together, but he needs a bridge to cross this financial chasm.

His daughter's mother is from France and has had to shoulder the immense burden of school

fees, medical insurance, and saving for their daughter's future, making her unable to help him

financially, not to mention placing a huge mental load on her well being. In addition, the stress

felt by both the mother and father have made the already challenging concept of co-parenting

almost impossible.This fundraiser is for a man who is fighting with everything he has left. It is no secret my brother

is neuro-divergent and has struggled with severe ADHD his entire life. He doesn't deny his

mistakes, he knows he should have reached out for help earlier, but right now, the only thing

that matters is securing basic stability so he can focus on his job search and being the fun,

loving and supportive father his daughter deserves.

We are simply asking for the time and stability he needs to find a new job, start his recovery,

and ensure his daughter always has a safe, clean place to stay with her daddy.
