Hello,
On August 14th a 7.2 Earthquake hit the south of Haiti, leaving over 1200 Haitians dead, thousands more buried alive with ongoing rescue, and many more displaced and in a severe state of emergency. Haiti is already under the iron grip of centuries of colonialism and imperialism, brutal American interventions, political turmoil, COVID outbreaks, and immense poverty that leaves the people with few options for accessing aid. The people themselves are administering all of the relief efforts, medical care & rescue, leaving them also responsible for the burden of buying all the supplies they need to help their fellow communities.
However, Haitians are not merely passive victims of perpetual atrocities. They continue to be the most resilient people on this planet, using all their resources to provide for one another, organizing in the most efficient ways they can, in the best practices for their communities. They have asked us to be in solidarity with them by providing them with the funds needed to buy their supplies. This is the most important thing we can do. Some of those people are my friends, who have traveled from Port-au-Prince to the southern cities of Jeremie and Cays to help distribute material needs, enact rescue operations, drive folks to hospitals, and provide much-needed assistance in all areas of devastation.
My dear friend, Jean Eddie, has been on the ground all week and expressed to me the overwhelming need for supplies to help the victims, survivors, and their families. In order to provide the community with direct funds to purchase what they need, I have started a Gofundme on his behalf. That way, every cent will go to the people, bypassing the bureaucratic and administrative fees of other organizations, the Trojan horse of foreign aid and its "strings attached" power dynamics, and giving the people the necessary items to help their ongoing mutual aid efforts. After the goal is met, I will deposit the funds, and send him money via Western Union. I will post all receipts, and keep full transparency.
As a tropical storm has also made its way to the area, the displaced peoples now have no shelter or protection.
The supplies that will be purchased are needed to support 75+ families. This will provide them with a kit until supplies arrive in a few weeks. This includes:
-Water
-Medical items for mobile and street clinics (antibiotics, gauze, sterile gloves, bandages, Betadine, first aid supplies, materials for sutures)
-Baby products (diapers, baby wipes, baby food, and formula)
-Personal items (soap, deodorant, toilet paper, toothbrushes, toothpaste)
-Food (pasta, rice, oil)
-Sheets, clothes, tents
ANY amount of donation is truly appreciated. Supplies are needed as soon as possible.
Thank you,
Jean Eddie Alexandre & Rachael Malott
