Urgent Flood Relief in Central Mozambique

During the past week, the Central part of Mozambique (Manica, Zambezia and Sofala provinces) has been severely affected by Idai Cyclone which hit the region with heavy rains and winds of up to 177km/h (106 mph). As a result, the floods have already destroyed more than 5,756 homes, affecting about 15,467 households and more than 141,325 people.
My name is Alfredo Cumbana, I am from Mozambique and student at the University of Rochester. My heart breaks seeing people from my country suffer because of the destruction of their homes and livelihoods. My fellow - countryman Bruno Sacatucua and I have set up this crowdfunding with the sole intention of helping the affected families in our country.
Initially, we had planned to use your donations to provide basic supplies such as food, clean water, etc to the affected families. However, in those meetings, we were advised to focus on other areas since other NGOs were already taking care of those needs due to their easy access to these supplements at a much cheaper cost.
So we have decided to use the funds to rehabilitate a local school, Escola Primaria Completa Munhava Matope, in a poor neighborhood in Beira. The school has about 1500 students and it used to have 7 classrooms. Because of the cyclone, two classrooms fell down and the others are partially or totally roofless. Our plan is to put this school back to normal conditions, this will allow the students to get back to normal school routine.
During Naira’s visit to Beira, she was able to identify a local organization called APOIA, a local organization that supports youth projects in Beira. They will be our partner in the implementation of the project. Together with the organization, they were able to create a partnership with the government that would enable us to start with the construction process. We have also received a proposal from three different constructing companies, and we are in the process of selecting one.
Yuma, one of our teammates based in the US, is the financial manager of the project who once I withdraw the funds to my account and have identified the constructing company, will be responsible for transferring the amount to a joint account with our partner, APOIA. I will withdraw the funds to my personal account and transfer it to Yuma who will be wire transferring all the funds we have raised to the joint account in Mozambique and together with APOIA start the school rehabilitation.
