Urgent Famine Appeal for Somalia

As you might be aware, the World Health Organisation (hWHO) has recently announced the impending danger of famine that Somalia faces for the third time in the past 25 years, the most recent one happening in 2011 which took the lives of over 260,000 people. Already in the past couple of weeks alone, at least 110 people have died from lack of water and starvation.

As stated by WHO, the current situation is that half of Somalia’s population (6.2 million people) requires an immediate action of humanitarian help.

On the report WHO has said over 363,000 children are acutely malnourished and 70,000 are severely malnourished and therefore are in urgent need of life-saving support.

We (Ibrahim Hussein, Muhammed Ige, Iman Egeh, Abdi Ahmed) are a group of professionals made up of Accountant, Engineers and Healthcare professionals who are friends and family living in Manchester - U.K. We are working with the Sahan Development organisation which is a charity based in Manchester, UK (www.sahan.org.uk). This organisation is working hard to actively support the people that are most affected by the devastating famine.

The majority of us are from a rural area of Somalia which is largely isolated. About 75% of the people live nomadically and generally rely on their livestock as their main source of livelihood. Currently, due to the devastating impact of the drought, the majority of the people have lost most if not all their livelihood, which has resulted in deeply distressing consequences such as starvation and death. We have direct contact with people supporting the camps and are in daily contact by whatsapp and phone.

The current situation that these nomads are facing include lack of water, food or essential medication - and even the ones that could escape the tragedy by traveling to neighbouring villages in search of sustenance – they too are in dire need of humanitarian aid and medical treatment.

How the money we raise will help:

With your aid, our target is to help treat the children who are malnourished by buying and distributing nourishment foods. Our aim is to also help and support pregnant women who are especially vulnerable in these difficult conditions. This region is severely hit by the drought so we plan on transporting water to pastoral people. In addition, we plan on helping the people that have lost all their livestock and have come to surrounding villages destitute and in need of support in order to survive. Moreover, we plan on providing emergency medicine to those that are in need of it.

The funds will be send to Sahan's local representative in the region Mr Iidle Ibrahim to reach the beneficiaries via one of the largest money transfer firm in East Africa  Dhabshiil. The banking sector in Somali is non-existent and the only way for money to reach the country is via money transfer firms. This method is used by everyone including major NGO like the UN and others.

As beautifully put by Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) “What actions are most excellent? To gladden the heart of human beings, to feed the hungry, to help the afflicted, to lighten the sorrow of the sorrowful, and to remove the sufferings of the injured.” We believe that it is our duty and obligation to help and support our fellow human beings and to alleviate suffering whenever it is in our means to do so. The tragic deaths could have been prevented and we still have a chance to do something before more lives are lost.
There is a powerful quote from Martin Luther King Jr that drives the work that we aspire to do: “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, ‘What are you doing for others?”

So please help us aid people in Somalia before it is too late for them!
