While the coronavirus pandemic seems to be nearing its end in wealthy countries, Bolivia is currently experiencing a devastating third wave that is far worse than the first and second waves earlier in the pandemic.
The Bolivian healthcare system has crashed. Vaccines are so scarce they are virtually unavailable. Very few people have access to masks, face shields, or hand sanitizer. As a result, the virus is spreading at alarming rates, and many people who contract COVID-19 are unable to access medical care.
The situation is dire: Half of A Breeze of Hope's 37 staff members in Bolivia have recently contracted the coronavirus and its faster spreading and potentially more dangerous variants.
At our center in Bolivia, we are struggling to fund COVID-related expenses while simultaneously funding our programs and services for child and adolescent survivors of sexual violence.
A Breeze of Hope must urgently direct financial support to Bolivia to respond to this crisis and prevent the spread of COVID-19 among our staff and our service population.
We need your help to raise at least $15,000 by June 30, 2021 to provide the following much-needed resources to more than 300 individuals - our staff, children, teens, and their families - in Bolivia:
- Masks
- Face shields
- Hand sanitizer
- Disinfectants
- Laptops (for staff to social distance by working from home and avoiding crowded buses to access public computers)
- Taxis (to avoid crowded buses) for staff to respond to emergency situations, for staff, children, and families to get to court, and for visits to healthcare providers
- Household food, pantry, and hygiene items (to facilitate ongoing social distancing)
Please consider making a donation toward A Breeze of Hope's emergency COVID-19 expenses today. Anything you can give helps our staff and the children and families we serve to stay healthy, and allows us to respond to this crisis while continuing to provide life-saving programs and services to young survivors of sexual abuse.
In the video above, released on June 11, 2021, Al Jazeera News covers the third wave of the coronavirus pandemic in Bolivia. Cochabamba, where A Breeze of Hope's center in Bolivia is located, is also featured in this video.
