Help Nona Get Her Meowstectomy
Donation protected
Hi everyone!
This is Nona. She's 11 years old and has been with me since 2021, after being surrendered by her previous owner of 8 years. She was the last cat left at the PetSmart adoption center from Orange County Animal Services. She was just a whopping $10 to adopt, but she's been worth so much more to me. Through my first apartment, my first nursing job, a couple moves, and a really tough 2025—she’s been there.
Recently, we discovered a lump on her lower abdomen that has been growing. It is currently the size of a golf ball.
I’ve been bringing Nona in for routine checkups again this year, and the lump wasn’t present during her earlier visits. It developed quickly and unexpectedly. Since we discovered it, I’ve followed up with multiple vets to figure out the best path forward for her.
After some vet visits and pathology testing, we’ve been told it’s a “probable mammary neoplasia”—most likely a mammary tumor, which is common in older female cats. The only way to know for sure (and to treat it) is through surgery. If left untreated, the tumor could ulcerate, cause serious infections and bleeding, and ultimately put her in a more dangerous situation down the line.
The vets have recommended a mastectomy to remove the tumor and possibly the entire mammary chain to prevent further spread (they say it’s a very aggressive cancer in cats). A double mastectomy might be necessary in the future, but I’m taking things one step at a time to give her the best chance at recovery.
I’ve received surgical cost estimates from three different vets—ranging anywhere from $2,500 to $6,000. The total costs include not just the surgery, but also imaging (like x-rays and ultrasounds) to see if the cancer has spread, bloodwork, anesthesia, medications, and post-op care. These steps are crucial to making sure we’re choosing the safest and most effective treatment plan for her.
This support would also help me immensely, as I’ve already paid hundreds of dollars out of pocket for her past appointments and testing to get us to this point. I’m doing everything I can to find a path forward that gives her the best chance without putting her through unnecessary stress.
Thankfully, despite her age, Nona is currently healthy enough to safely undergo surgery. Multiple vets have confirmed that now is the best window to operate. Waiting longer could make things riskier as the tumor grows or her health declines.
Every donation (no matter the amount!) will go directly toward’s Nona’s medical care. I know money is tight right now for so many people, but even a share or a few dollars would mean the world.
I’ll be honest, putting this together feels really out of my comfort zone…I don’t like asking for this kind of help. But Nona has been my comfort through so much change and challenge. I want to do everything I can to comfort her through this.
