Our 3 month old puppy, Lola, has unfortunately gone blind overnight from 06/20 to 06/21. We took her to the ER on 06/21 to address lethargy (in puppies this is usually from common diseases like distemper/parvo) and we suspected she was having some vision problems. Upon various testing and bloodwork, Lola came back negative from any toxins, drugs, or infectious diseases.
The next step for Lola is to visit a neurologist. At this time, the veterinarians are worried about the possibility of seizures, tumor(s), or even spinal fluid leakage (CSF). Lola will be getting an MRI and possibly a spinal tap on this upcoming Monday 06/23.
UPDATE MONDAY 06/23
After Lola’s MRI and spinal tap, the neurologist let us know that she has an abscess, infection, and meningitis in her brain that is pressing on the optic nerve area. He suspects Lola bit or chewed on something that punctured the roof her mouth and caused an oral infection. She will be on antibiotics for 6 months and a followup MRI will be needed. There is possibility her vision could return as well.
Costs:
ER visit on 06/21 $1600
Neurology visit (including MRI/spinal tap and overnight stay) on 06/23 $5000
