My name is Luis, and I live in Hobbs, NM. I’ve always believed that if you see suffering, you don’t just keep driving. Last night on Bender, I came across a dog who had just been hit in a hit-and-run. He was dragging himself off the street, crying, terrified, and extremely thin. You could tell he had been suffering long before the car ever hit him.

I immediately tried to get him help:

* I called two vet clinics — both said they could not treat him unless I assumed full responsibility and cost.

* I called the Hobbs Humane Society — there is no after-hours emergency service.

* I called the non-emergency line and was told animal control would not respond until Monday morning.

This dog did not have until Monday.

Leaving him in the street would mean he gets hit again, suffers further, or dies. So I picked him up and brought him somewhere safe.

He has:

* A broken leg

* Severe malnutrition/emaciation

* Pain and trauma from the accident

To make this even more heartbreaking — I found what appears to be a recent post from his previous owner giving him away. Whether he was abandoned or given to someone who didn’t care for him, this needs to be looked into. No animal deserves to end up like this.

I want to be clear:

I already have four pets, and every one of them is a rescue from situations just like this. That is literally how I ended up with them. I do not have space or resources for a fifth — but I also couldn’t leave him there to suffer and die. This is the 22nd animal I’ve stepped in to help in the last five years because Hobbs has almost no accessible resources for injured or abandoned animals, especially after hours.

I’m not asking for help because I want another pet.

I’m asking because no one else came, and I cannot cover the medical care on my own.
