Urgent Care for Beans: Mystery Eye Swelling

Donation protected
Hello, my name is Lily and this Gofundme is for my dog, Beans.

As some of you may know, Beans underwent surgery for his granuloma on his back, cysts underneath his armpits, and removed some skin tags (in case they were cancerous). I’ve sold almost all of my collections to fund his previous surgery and post-op. I wasn’t aware of his health complications when I adopted him at a year and a half but from the moment I did it has been an uphill battle. His neuter had complications as only one testicle had descended and the Vet had to find the other one in his abdomen. Then his granuloma. Then while saving for his granuloma surgery, cysts and skin tags started forming.

Beans did have pet insurance, but was dropped by both Nationwide & Lemonade (respectively) due to his Flea Allergy Dermatitis and seasonal alopecia being labeled as “pre-existing conditions.” He is on Simparica Trio but he still gets flea bites from our walks, dog parks, hiking, etc. It gets severe during the spring/summers requiring a cytopoint shot every month.

His last surgery was a bit less than 6 months ago. I had just financially recovered and am now breaking even but it appears that Beans is having a new issue.

His right eye is swelling. I’m not sure why, my Vet is not sure why, we have already done another cytopoint shot with no avail. Ruled out conjunctivitis. Did an eye exam and a cornea test. All came back clean. Beans was prescribed eye wash & ointment at this time. The Vet did an overall check next follow up visit and had found that his tooth had cracked on the right back side and hypothesizes that maybe his tooth is infected and it had turned into an abscess over his eye. The plaque is minimum and he has gotten a dental cleaning/scaling (without sedation) about 8 months ago.

Beans is currently on antibiotics (Amoxicillin & Clavulanate Potassium Tablets 125 mg) & NSAID (Carprofen Caplets 25 mg) for about a week now but the swelling has not gone down. In fact, it’s been swelling more even with the cone on him 24/7. I am taking him to the vet tomorrow for another follow up as I’m not sure if his tooth is the reason here or if it may be something else. I know the Vet will bring up imaging; and I have already exhausted my credit card for the constant follow ups for this new issue.

Growing up, I had constant eye pain. My parents were immigrants with no access to healthcare. My father told me to “ignore the pain and it’ll go away” while my mother told me to “Pray to God to take away the pain.” I lost my vision in my right eye at 18. I am 28 now. I still struggle with vision in my left eye.

This hits too close to home as I don’t want to take the approach my parents did to me. If Beans does go blind in his eye, I personally feel as though I was no better than my parents and continuing this generational cycle to my dog.

I know he’s predisposed to health issues. I know this probably won’t be the last surgery. But he brings me so much joy. He’s helped me in the 3.5 years of having him get clinical depression off my chart. I started enjoying life. Stopped the ideation (IYKYK) and ultimately he became my purpose in life. His health problems is not his fault but I am now at a standstill on how to financially tackle this.

I am coming on gofundme as a last resort.

The donations will go towards his imaging, surgery, anesthesia, post surgery follow ups, and any new surprises (for example if the tooth is not the problem). I will be updating this page as Beans and I figure this out.

My goal right now is to celebrate his 5th birthday without him in pain.

He may be biologically defective, but he is perfect in my eyes (metaphorically since my vision isn’t that good to begin with )

If you would like daily updates on Beans, you can follow him on his instagram account @beans_minidox. I will be starting a daily series called "Daily Doses of Beans" where I will post up moments of Beans that make me happy and to further share out his fundraiser.

Thank you for your time if you read this far.
