I never imagined I would be writing this. It has to be a parent's worst nightmare, or one of them at least.
My son is 25 years old and autistic. He was diagnosed in childhood and has always been quiet, sensitive, and deeply uncomfortable in loud, chaotic, high-pressure environments. He struggles to advocate for himself under stress, especially when overwhelmed or afraid.
Right now, he's sitting in jail.
The court has modified his bail at $3,000 cash-only , meaning the full amount must be paid before he can be released. I have struggled with my own physical and mental health issues for so long, I'm unable to work, fighting to obtain disability benefits, and have no means to pay for his release alone. We will lose our home if he's in jail another week
What makes this devastating is that my son is medically vulnerable. He relies on prescribed mood-stabilizing medication, along with other necessary medications, to stay regulated and safe ---but due to delays and bureaucracy, he has gone without consistent access to those medications and is flat out being denied others. He doesn't have access to the mental health services he's been accustomed to for almost 20 years!
In addition to autism, my son has serious underlying medical conditions that make his situation especially dangerous. He has a liver disease, sensory processing disorder, and a rare genetic anomaly that makes medication changes medically risky and potentially life-threatening if not carefully managed. Sudden disruption to his routine, environment, and prescribed treatment places him at significant risk
Jail is overwhelming for anyone. For someone with autism, sensory sensitivities, and difficulty communicating medical needs, it is terrifying.
As a mother, there is nothing more helpless than knowing your child is scared and you cannot reach them.
Gracious friends have already stepped in and pledged/given roughly $1,600, and I am beyond grateful! We still need $1,400 to bring him home!
This fundraiser isn't about debating charges or legal arguments. The legal process will take the time it takes, and it will unfold in court---not online. This is about:
● Protecting a disabled adult who is struggling to cope
● Restoring access to necessary medications
● Reuniting a terrified son with the one place he feels safe: home
I keep thinking of a line from his favorite band, and it has carried many through dark chapters:
"I want to heal, I want to feel"
Right now, healing starts with getting my son out of a place that is actively harming him.
If you are able to help---whether through a donation or by sharing this---you are giving more than money. You are giving safety, dignity, and a mother the chance to breathe again.
Thank you for seeing us. Thank you for caring. Thank you for helping me bring my son home.
