In a profound act of self-determination, the Wuikinuxv Nation reclaimed governance of its K–12 school from the public district in 2024, creating Wànukvq̓àq̓utha'ailas School. This bold move is bringing families back home to Rivers Inlet, so children can learn surrounded by their language, culture, and community.

Because government funding depends on enrollment numbers, funding remains minimal while the community transitions home. We need to bridge this two-year funding gap while the school grows.

Urgent Need: Autism Support for September

The school currently has two autistic students, with a need to accommodate several more in the coming years. While one child received Jordan’s Principle funding for a 1-on-1 Educational Assistant (EA), the second child is trapped in a long administrative waiting queue. Without an EA this September, this young boy will enter a multi-grade classroom without the care he desperately needs. In a multi-grade environment with wide age gaps and high energy, a child with autism can easily become overwhelmed. The Director of Education even built a dedicated sensory room for him—but he cannot safely use it without a 1-on-1 EA.

Remote Realities & Funding Shortfalls

Located in isolated Rivers Inlet, the school faces extreme logistical costs:

• Mental Health Support: Unfunded budgets threaten to cut the fly-in mental health teams who visit the children throughout the year.

• Basic Supplies: Shipping costs are so high that the Director of Education recently had a school bus packed with supplies and shipped to her home just to save money.

A Community Helping Itself

The Wuikinuxv Nation is doing everything possible to succeed: creating local jobs, training staff, and building safe learning environments. They are doing the work, but they need our support to bridge the gap.
