My name is Ashley. I just recently lost my grandmother due to a heart attack; our apartment was broken into not a few days afterwards, it was completely unexpected and it left insurmountable grief and pain in her absence. The past couple of months following have been demoralizing in every way possible: my grandmothers husband, who stated that he promised to honor my grandmothers wishes and make sure I was taken care of, cleaned out her bank and cut all ties with me and refused to allow me to take part in anything beyond the initial insurance due to me knowing all of her information and him knowing absolutely none. My grandmother and I have been put through so much after the loss of my mother in 2009, and now I am completely on my own in terms of their guidance. Currently I face retaliation from the landlord on past-due rent for the apartment my grandmother and I leased together, along with the eviction he served when he rejected my application to take over as head of household despite me being on the lease since 2019. My grandmother taught me to be independent and self sufficient, but she also taught me that community, empathy and kindness are just as important. She gave when she had nothing; I’m pleading with anyone who is able to help me now as I struggle to pick up the pieces in face of this devastation and process this absolutely crushing loss in my life of the woman who raised me and whose memory I will always cherish. It is only by her strength instilled in me and the grace of God that I am still here today. God bless.
