Imagine facing a critical illness with no safety net and no way to pay for the treatment that could save your life. This is the harrowing reality for my beloved sister, Susan, in South Africa.
Susan's fight began in July 2022 when she was diagnosed with breast cancer. She bravely underwent initial chemotherapy at a state hospital, as she had no medical aid. However, her journey has been plagued by obstacles. Due to misinformation from a private oncologist, she experienced a crucial delay in receiving vital treatment, allowing the cancer to advance.
As a Stage 4 patient, Susan urgently requires a specific, aggressive treatment plan. A highly regarded private oncologist recommended a regimen involving Herceptin, Taxol, and Zometa, along with regular CT scans, sonograms, and blood work. Tragically, the state hospital does not provide these advanced treatments, and without them, the cancer has continued to spread.
Just months ago, our family watched helplessly as Susan was forced to stop her life-saving treatments because the funds ran out. We were desperately trying to keep her going, but the financial burden became insurmountable. It was before December 2024, and the impact has been devastating.
Now, her situation has taken a terrifying turn for the worse.
In the last few weeks, Susan has experienced a rapid decline. The visible sore on her breast has returned, a stark and painful reminder of the cancer's relentless progression. But even more alarming are the new, terrifying symptoms that have emerged:
• Concerning Confusion and Memory Lapses: Susan is getting confused, forgetting things even while driving, and at times struggling to articulate her thoughts clearly, even turning her words around. This has made basic communication challenging.
• Difficulty with Complex Tasks: My parents recently had to help her compose a simple email to her doctor, so she could accurately relay her deteriorating situation. This shows just how much her cognitive abilities are being affected.
• Urgent Need for a Brain Scan: Her doctor is deeply concerned and has requested an urgent brain scan to investigate these alarming neurological changes. This scan is critical to understanding if the cancer has spread to her brain, a potentially life-threatening development that demands immediate action.
Without this scan and renewed access to specialised treatments like Herceptin, Taxol, and Zometa, we are losing Susan.
Every day that passes without funds means the cancer has more time to take hold. The cost of this urgent brain scan is immediate, and the lack of funds for it, and for any further treatment, is putting her life at risk.
Her Family Needs Their Mother, and Our Parents Need Relief
Susan is more than just a patient; she's a loving wife and mother to two incredible children. Her daughter is only just becoming a teenage girl at 13, a time when she needs her mother's guidance and presence more than ever. Her young son has just started his school career, embarking on a journey that should be filled with his mother's unwavering support and encouragement.
They are facing the unimaginable prospect of losing their mom at a time when they need her most.
Beyond her immediate family, our parents are also shouldering an immense burden. While they want to help Susan, they are approaching retirement and simply cannot carry the significant financial weight of her ongoing medical needs. Securing funds for Susan's treatment is also about lifting this overwhelming stress from their shoulders, allowing them to prepare for their retirement without this crushing worry.
Our Goal: ZAR 300,000 (Approximately AUD 26,000, depending on exchange rates)
This is the lifeline Susan so desperately needs. This crucial amount will cover:
• Immediate Brain Scan & Diagnostics: To urgently assess her current condition and determine if her Stage 4 breast cancer has progressed.
• A Full Year of Specialised Cancer Treatment: To resume the vital medical interventions, specifically the Herceptin, Taxol, and Zometa regimen, that were tragically cut short and are unavailable in the state system.
• One Year of Private Medical Aid Coverage: This is a long-term solution. Once this initial year is covered, the medical aid will then cover a significant portion of her future treatments, providing a sustainable pathway to care and truly relieving the immense stress on her and our family. This will allow her to focus solely on her fight to get well and be there for her children as they grow.
