Urgent Appeal for Support After Devastating Fire

Dear Friends,

I’m reaching out today with a heavy heart and a sense of vulnerability that’s difficult to put into words. My name is Cordie, and I’m a young professional living alone in Montreal, Quebec. I never imagined I’d find myself in a situation like this, but on Saturday, my life was turned upside down.

What started as a normal day quickly became one of the most terrifying experiences I’ve ever faced. After putting oil on the stove, I stepped away briefly to change, only to return moments later to find my kitchen engulfed in flames. In a panic, I fought the fire alone, managing to extinguish it without injury—but not without damage. My stove and cupboards were completely destroyed.

Now, I find myself in an overwhelming position. Because I wasn’t insured at the time, my landlord is holding me responsible for covering all the repairs and replacements out of pocket— expenses I simply can’t shoulder on my own.

I’m sharing this with the hope that anyone who is able to help, in any way, might be willing to do so. This has been an incredibly humbling and frightening experience, and I’m still processing the weight of it all.

C’est avec un cœur lourd et une profonde vulnérabilité que je m’adresse à vous aujourd’hui. Je m’appelle Cordie, une jeune professionnelle vivant seule à Montréal, au Québec. Jamais je n’aurais imaginé me retrouver dans une situation aussi éprouvante, mais ce samedi, ma vie a basculé.

Ce qui devait être une journée ordinaire s’est transformé en cauchemar. Après avoir mis de l’huile à chauffer sur la cuisinière, je suis partie me changer, pensant n’être absente que quelques instants. Mais en revenant, j’ai découvert ma cuisine en flammes. Dans un élan de panique, j’ai réussi à maîtriser l’incendie seule, heureusement sans me blesser. Cependant, ma cuisinière et mes placards ont été entièrement détruits.

Aujourd’hui, je fais face à une situation accablante. N’étant pas assurée au moment des faits, mon propriétaire me demande d’assumer l’ensemble des frais pour les réparations et le remplacement des dégâts, des dépenses que je ne peux malheureusement pas couvrir seule.

Je partage cette épreuve avec l’espoir que certaines personnes parmi vous puissent m’apporter un soutien, quel qu’il soit. Cette expérience a été aussi terrifiante qu’humiliante, et j’essaie encore d'en mesurer toutes les conséquences.
