Help My Family Rebuild After the Flood in Bintulu, Malaysia

Dear Friends,

It is with a heavy heart that I reach out to you today. Last Wednesday, 29th Jan, what was meant to be a joyous family reunion for Chinese new year, turned into a nightmare. A severe weather event has forever changed my family’s lives.

For three relentless days, heavy rain combined with an unusual king tide caused catastrophic flooding in my home town of Bintulu, Malaysia. This flooding has displaced over 15,000 people, killed several people and destroyed hundreds of homes. Among those affected were three homes of my family members, including my parents, my brothers, and their families.

With no insurance and no government assistance available, the lives of 18 of my loved ones were turned upside down in an instant.

Thankfully all of my family are physically safe. We are all now coming to terms with this and pulling together as a family to try and get back to some form of normal.

Many of you who know me have likely met some of the wonderful people now facing this crisis. My family has always been the type to give what little they have, no matter how tough things get. But now, they need help. Rebuilding won’t be easy, but with your support, we can make sure they have the essentials to start over

All their belongings and living essentials have been destroyed by the floodwaters.

Simple items that we all take for granted in normal times such as bedding, clothes, stoves, fridges, washing machines, furniture and even the timber structures of the houses themselves had been badly damaged or destroyed.
