Urgent Appeal for Community Support After Devastating House Fire

Personal Account of the Incident

Hi, my name is DeAnne Dewey, and I live in Hillsboro, Oregon. Just a few days ago, at approximately 3:30 AM, I was startled by popping sounds and a woman's scream. Looking out through my blinds, I saw that my neighbor’s house was engulfed in flames. Immediately, I ran toward her home, calling out her name in desperation.

Rapid Emergency Response

Fortunately, the Hillsboro Fire Chief lives next door and met me in the street. Emergency services responded with remarkable speed—eight fire trucks and three ambulances arrived within minutes. The firefighters bravely rushed into the burning house to rescue the three individuals inside.

Impact on Residents and Their Pets

Inside the home were a 92-year-old father visiting his handicapped son, as well as my friend, the caregiver, and her two dogs. All three were rescued and quickly transported to three different hospitals. In the aftermath, I took care of the dogs, bathing and comforting them as they dealt with the trauma.

Tragic Outcomes and Ongoing Challenges

Sadly, within about 24 hours, the elderly father succumbed to injuries sustained in the fire. The handicapped son remains intubated in the hospital, while the caregiver has since been released. The events of that night have drastically and permanently changed their lives.

Now, amidst the ashes, they face an incredibly difficult journey. While insurance will help, the deductibles and the many expenses required to rebuild their lives are daunting.
