After Hurricane Irma, Miranda returned home hoping to rebuild her life. Instead, developers destroyed it.
Miranda, a local schoolteacher in her 60s, has spent decades building a life on land she owned under Barbuda’s 300-year-old communal land system. With her late husband, Miranda lived, farmed, and ran the much-loved Pink Sands Beach Bar.
But after the devasting hurricane struck the island, developers moved in and stole what is hers. They bulldozed her bar under the guise of “clearing debris,” fenced off her land, and restricted the community’s access to the coastline.
Today, luxury developers have swallowed up the land surrounding her home. And they won’t stop until they take that too.
Developers have already taken 22 of her 30 acres. They have destroyed her business, excavated her land, blocked access to the beach, and pressured her to sell.
Miranda has refused. This is her home, and it’s not for sale.
With no other option, Miranda is taking them to court.
Why this case is so important
This case is bigger than one person.
If she loses:
• The last stretch of locally held coastline could be lost
• The people of Barbuda could lose all access to their own beaches
• A precedent is set that land grabs like this can continue unchecked
This case is already making a difference. Legal action has forced one of the developments to pause. What happens next will determine if that pause becomes permanent, or if the land grab continues.
If Miranda wins, she keeps her home and proves that massively wealthy developers cannot bully local people off their land or profit from taking what isn’t theirs.
The risk
The law is on her side. But without financial backing, taking this to court could cost her everything she has left.
If Miranda loses, she could be forced to pay tens of thousands of pounds in legal costs. If she cannot pay, the developers could go after the remaining piece of her land.
Miranda could lose everything.
Miranda needs your help
We are raising funds to protect Miranda from this financial risk so she can take her case to court.
Without this support, she may be forced to walk away, allowing the developers to get away with stealing her land for their own profit.
Stand with Miranda
Miranda should not have to choose between defending her rights and losing everything she has left.
She is standing her ground for her home, her community, and future generations.
Help make sure this case is heard and that those who take land unlawfully are challenged.
