The story
Part I - All Happiness It all started on mission trips from Indiana to El Salvador, where Fernelis began going with the “For a Smile El Salvador” ministry. There, they spent time with the people of Ahuachapan and churches in the area. In the summer of 2018, Fernelis and Vanessa became friends, as well as many other people from that city. Aside from becoming friends and connecting through ministry, there was something that made a connection in their minds and their hearts which over time they discovered. Summer of 2020, mid pandemic, they began their long-distance relationship and made wedding plans for December 2020.
Fast forward two years later in 2022, they found out that they would be parents for the first time. Months later they received the surprise that they were expecting twins, a boy and a girl. This filled everyone with happiness.
Part II - Insecurity and Fear One early morning in Ahuachapan, El Salvador at just 28 weeks pregnant, Vanessa started to have pain and bleeding. Once Vanessa arrived at the hospital, doctors said she needed to have an emergency c-section. Hannah and Matthew were born prematurely and with multiple health problems.
Part III - Health Problems Since the twins were born with premature lungs, they had to be intubated. Due to the limited resources of the Ahuachapan hospital where they were born, they arranged for the transfer to the central children's hospital in San Salvador in November 2022. At the children's hospital they found other health problems. At just 2-pounds baby Hannah had internal bleeding in her head (grade II left intraventricular hemorrhage). She arrived at the hospital with tube ventilation and severe hypothermia caused by the transfer of several hours from one hospital to another. She also had other complications such as bronchiectasis or pulmonary dysphylaxis, premature retinosplasty, low homoglobin, blood pressure, creatinine, which has caused her to need multiple blood transfusions during the last 4 months to help her respiratory system and general condition. All of this while still being on oxygen by cannula and a breathing machine C-pap till this day. She also underwent a surgical intervention to close the ductus arteriosus between the heart and the lungs. She has suffered from Enterocolitis which has been treated with broad spectrum antibiotics. The latest diagnosis adds two other problems, a blocked nasal passage and vocal cords affected by the tubes which prevent the baby from being heard when she tries to cry. The actual cause of this is yet to be determined. Matthew also born 2 pounds, was received at the hospital in San Salvador with cold mottled skin. He experienced a respiratory arrest which lasted 2 minutes. He was also using mechanical respiration by tube for two months. Matthew was diagnosed with pulmonary lesions and pulmonary dysplasia, anemia, low platelets, abdominal symptoms of hepatic cholestasis, inflamed liver, sepsis, and different bacteria such as Stenotrophomonas maltrophilia, Enterocolitis, Pentavalent Pneumococcus, Escherichia Coli, Morganella morgani and Rotavirus. He has been treated with different broad-spectrum antibiotics to treat the bacteria. He also suffers from Retinosplaty of premature ROP type 2 zone 3 in both eyes, Ostopenia and thin bones with some fractures and some irregularities in the intestines, all while still being on oxygen by cannula. Both babies, Matthew and Hannah are still on cannula ventilation.
Due to the few resources available in the country of El Salvador and hospital limitations where they were being treated, they were transferred from San Salvador to the United States via air ambulance. This transfer was made possible thanks to the coordination of the US Embassy in El Salvador through a repatriation process and a loan guarantee from the State Department. When they arrived at Indiana, USA, they began treatment in the NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit) at the Franciscan Hospital.
A month later, they were transferred to Riley Children's Hospital where they are currently being treated by specialists. This has been Hannah and Matthews 4th transfer. Four hospitals, 4 ICUS, all in the last 4 months. Fernelis and Vanessa: We continue to pray and believe that there is a light at the end of the tunnel, that we will see how God manifests himself and will help many people with this testimony.

Parte I - Todo Felicidad Todo comenzó en los viajes misioneros desde Indiana a El Salvador, donde Fernelis comenzó a ir con el ministerio Por una Sonrisa El Salvador. Allí compartieron con la gente de Ahuachapan e iglesias del área. Allí se conocieron como amigos Fernelis y Vanessa en verano del 2018, como también conocieron a muchas otras personas de aquella ciudad. Había un enganche en sus mentes y sus corazones que luego fueron descubriendo en el tiempo, se hicieron amigos en las redes sociales y hasta el verano 2020 en plena pandemia entonces comenzaron una relación y compromiso a distancia y planificar sus bodas para Diciembre 2020, y dos años después, hasta el 2022 se enteraron que serían padres por primera vez. Meses después recibieron la sorpresa que eran gemelos o mellizos y otra noticia más era, que sería un niño y una niña, la parejita de bebes, lo cual lleno de felicidad a todos, hasta que de pronto todo cambió.
Parte II - Inseguridad y Miedo Estando en Ahuchapan El Salvador, una de las madrugadas, a las 28 semanas de embarazo de Vanessa tuvo un dolor y sangrado y fué el momento de llamar al doctor y correr al hospital para una emergencia. Al llegar a urgencias vieron que estaba lista para dar a luz apesar de no haber completado el ciclo de embarazo normal. Tuvieron que hacer una cesaria de emergencia y navieron los mellizos de forma prematura. No solo fueron prematuros sino que vinieron con multiples problemas de salud los cuales los han hecho pasar por tiempos difíciles.
Parte III - Problemas de Salud Al nacer con pulmones prematuros tuvieron que ser entubados, y por los recursos limitados del hospital de Ahuachapan donde nacieron arreglaron el traslado hacia el hospital central de ninos de San Salvador en Noviembre 2022. En el hospital de niños encontraron multiples problemas de salud, comenzando con la niña Hannah de 2 libras, tuvo un sangrado interno en la cabeza, (hemorragia intraventricular izquierda grado II ), y llego al hospital con ventilación por tubo, y con hipotermia severa por el traslado de varias horas de un hospital a otro y otras complicaciones como Bronquiectasia o diflaxia pulmonar, retinosplatia de prematuro, homoglobina, presion arterial y creatinina bajas lo cual ha provocado transfusiones de sangre constantes durante estos 4 meses para ayudar su sistema respiratorio y condicion general, pero aun no cesa en ella el oxigeno por canula y la respiracion por maquina. También le fué hecha una intervensión quirurgica para cerrar el ducto arterioso entre corazón y pulmón. Ha sufrido de Enterocolitis la cual ha sido tratada con antibióticos de amplio expectro. El ultimo diagnostico agrega otros dos problemas, un conducto de la nariz obstruido y cuerdas vocales afectadas por los tubos lo cual le impide a la bebe ser escuchada cuando trata de llorar pero aun esta por determinarse la razon real. En el niño Matthew también nacido de 2 libras, se recibió en el otro hospital en San Salvador con piel fria moteada, experimemento un paro respiratorio de 2 minutos, también utilizando respiración mecánica por tubo, por dos meses ambos niños entubados por el mismo tiempo. Se encuentró el niño con lesiones pulmonares y displasia pulmonar, anemia y plaquetas bajas, cuadro abdominal de colestasis hepática, higado inflamado, sepsis, y diferentes bacterias como Stenotrophomonas maltrophilia, Enterocolitis, Pentavalente Neumococo, Escherichia Coli, Morganella morgani y Rotavirus, los cuales han sido tratados con diferentes antibioticos de amplio expectro. Retinoplastia de prematuro ROP tipo 2 zona 3 en ambos ojos, Ostopenia y huesos delgados con algunas fracturas y algunas irregularidades en intestinos.. Ambos bebes Matthew y Hannah siguen con ayuda de respiración por canula. Fueron trasladados desde San Salvador hasta Estados Unidos vía ambulancia aerea, por los pocos recursos del país y limitaciones del hospital donde eran tratados. Gracias a la coordinación de la Embajada de EU en el Salvador mediante un proceso de repatriación y a garantía de préstamo del departamento de estado por un monto de 85,500 dólares para ser pagados entre 30 a 60 días antes que empiecen los intereses y cargos extras por retraso lo cual aumentaría el total a pagar. Al llegar al hospital Franciscan en Indiana, Estados Unidos han sido tratados en NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit) por un mes. Ahora nuevamente han sido trasladados por cuarta vez en un período de cuatro meses, este último, al hospital de niños Riley en Indiana por razones de algunos estudios y especialistas que sólo se encuentran en este centro de salud. Desde Noviembre 2022 al mes actual de Abril ya han pasado más de cuatro meses en intensivo, en 4 hospitales y con diferentes problemas de salud que aún estan siendo tratados y temas económicos que siguen afectado a toda la familia.
Todo comenzo feliz, tratando de comenzar una vida como familia y luego llegaron estos eventos que aún estan viviendo como matrimonio, Fernelis y Vanessa seguimos orando y creyendo que Dios se ha de manifestar y que hay una luz al final del tunel que veremos y ayudará a muchos con este testimonio, y pedimos a Dios que toque a todos los que lean y vean esta historia que puedan colaborar para poder pagar esta embulancia aerea charter con un total de 85,500 dólares y que no siga afectando mas la parte economica que también se suman todos los demas gastos que no se mencionan en este resumen.
