Be Their Hero: Save Karla's Animal Shelter!

SAVE KARLA’S ANIMAL SHELTER

Karla is a noble woman who has dedicated her entire life to the care of vulnerable animals in Nicaragua. Shellthon Zamora, the animal sanctuary she has spent the past 12 years building, is now in danger of thievery and starvation.

Karla’s work began at a young age, saving dogs and running operations out of her family home. Soon, however, this space was too small to accommodate all of the animals, and she expanded to a small plot of land with the help of a charity. With these new resources, she exponentially grew the number and types of animals she rescued– now hosting dozens of horses, dogs, cats, pigs, chickens, and many more. Even to an onlooker, it’s clear how deeply she cares for each and every one of these animals, and how much they love her in turn. The way the cats hover at her feet, or the way the pigs lean happily into her touch tell a story of a woman who not only cares for these animals as creatures, but as family.

Thievery and Scant Resources

Though she has already made immense contributions to animal welfare in her community, she faces immense challenges. Being one of few refuges for maltreated horses in Nicaragua, there are far more horses than land available in her space. She cares for sickly animals who need specialized medicine, and the increased number of animals in her care also means more food she needs to source.

She has no vehicle to transport equipment nor a stable source of income for the shelter. Despite her many sacrifices over the past decade, she has come upon a time of extreme hardship for her shelter where she cannot always get her animals the food or medicine they need to live comfortably.

Additionally, her shelter is located in a dangerous area, the city center of Managua, where drug and crime rates are high. Her shelter recently suffered a thievery attempt, where the barbed wires protecting her shelter were cut for access to the horses, intending to sell them for meat.

How You Can Help

We understand that Karla and the animals she’s rescued may seem far removed from your life, but in the love between every pet and their owner, there is a glimmer of Karla’s love for her animals. She is faced with the impossible task of caring for them all with dangerous threats and fiscal pressure breathing down her back, and we would be eternally grateful for any small donation that can be put towards helping her save her family.

Any amount donated will be put entirely toward the provision of resources for these animals, with long-term goals of helping Karla buy a vehicle to transport food for her animals, and to buy a safer plot of farmland that will enable her animal sanctuary to be entirely self-sustaining. Just $30 can feed a horse for an entire month.
