Hi everyone, my nephew is in the hospital for a rare autoimmune disease called ADEM (Acute Disseminated Encephalomyelitis). It is a rare neurological disorder in which the immune system mistakenly attacks the brain and spinal cord which causes inflammation. He complained of a sore throat on Monday and Tuesday my sister found him passed out on the floor, unresponsive. He tested negative for strep and everything else, so we don’t exactly know what virus/bacteria caused this but it leaked into his brain causing swelling in his brain. On Friday, he was able to open his eyes and blink for us but otherwise he cannot move his body at all. Friday night to Saturday morning, his BP would not come down no matter what they did and he is not doing so well and he won’t wake up even after being off the sedatives for over a day. After my sister asked everyone to stop sugar coating things for her, the nurse finally told my sister that she has never seen a case of ADEM get this bad in her life. When he can finally wake up and be responsive, he will have to go to a rehab facility and this process can take up to 4-6 weeks for him. In his case, possibly longer. I’m asking for help for my sister with medical expenses because I know this is going to be an extremely long journey for him. Anything helps. All donations will go straight to my sister. Thank you so much.
