As of January 28, 2025, a USAID funding freeze has caused a critical shortage of resources for the PEPFAR program. Having worked at a PEPFAR-sponsored HIV/AIDS clinic at St. Francis Naggalama Hospital in Uganda, I have been informed by the general practitioner that he is now volunteering his time, as he is no longer receiving payment. He anticipates that the clinic’s funds will be completely depleted by April at the latest. This clinic plays a vital role in the Naggalama community, providing essential HIV/AIDS medications and ensuring adherence through frequent follow-ups and awareness-focused support groups.
Beyond its impact on domestic programs, this USAID freeze is endangering lives globally. The effects are being felt in underserved communities that rely on consistent medical care and outreach efforts. All funds will be securely transferred through a team of Cornell Palliative Physicians, who travel to Uganda three times a year to provide care and support to those in need through their nonprofit initiative.
