Urgent Aid for Gage's Severe Health Battle

Hey everyone, I am starting this GoFundMe for my sister and her family. On February 25, 2025, my sister took my 17-year-old nephew, Gage, to urgent care because he wasn't feeling well. He was subsequently transferred via ambulance to Texas Children's Downtown with the estimated discharge date still unknown. He was then diagnosed with upper and lower pneumonia, rhinovirus, and what they had originally diagnosed as RIME, which has since been upgraded to SJS TENS. For those of you who don't know what that is, let me explain: Stevens-Johnson Syndrome (SJS) and Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis (TEN).

SJS and TEN are severe, life-threatening skin reactions that cause widespread skin detachment and blistering. They are typically caused by medications, although other triggers may exist. Because of this, Gage has been dealing with severe symptoms such as:

Fever

Flu-like symptoms

Painful, blistering skin rash that spreads rapidly

Skin detachment

Involvement of mucous membranes (mouth, eyes, nose, genitals)

Blisters in the mouth, eyes, and other mucous membranes

SJS and TEN are serious conditions with a high mortality rate. The prognosis depends on the severity of the reaction, the age and health of the patient, and the promptness of treatment. Early diagnosis and aggressive treatment can significantly improve outcomes. SJS and TEN are often considered part of a spectrum of disease, with SJS being less severe than TEN. The extent of skin detachment is used to differentiate between the two conditions. SJS typically involves less than 10% of the body surface area, while TEN involves more than 30%.

As you can imagine, this is an extremely scary and stressful time for my family, especially my sister! On top of the medical bills, travel expenses, food, and parking, being there for and with Gage has left her out of work since 2/21, as well as Gage. So, regular household bills are starting to pile up.
