Urgent need: help us bring a family from Afghanistan to Grand Island, Nebraska-- ASAP!
Right now, one of the only avenues for permanent resettlement in the US is for SIV holders, Special Immigrant Visa, which is a special designation for people who helped the US military and are currently in danger for their lives in their home country. Our private sponsorship group has been matched with an SIV family from Afghanistan who would like to resettle in Grand Island: a mom and dad and 3 young children. Due to safety concerns, we are not able to share more detailed information about them.
Our sponsorship group will be responsible for helping them transition into life in our community, including things like finding housing, securing employment, figuring out transportation, and helping navigate appointments and paperwork. While there is a $5,000 grant already added to our Gofundme to assist with their startup costs, our group will need to raise an additional $10,000 to ensure that we are able to meet their needs during their first 90 days here. This money will go directly towards their resettlement costs, providing food, furnishing, rent, utilities, etc.
Since we anticipate them arriving very soon, this is a time-critical request! What a great opportunity to welcome a family that worked alongside the US military and now needs our help to settle somewhere safe and permanent. We are so excited to welcome them here and we encourage you to join us!
(The photo is of sandhill cranes landing near the Platte River during their annual migration about a month ago. Over a million cranes stop by central Nebraska every year. It's a great place to migrate to!)
